Yes, I would say that is a balance. As a teacher, I think that the new math ideas are great, but they really need to just learn it (multiplication, etc.) once they get the concept. I get so many kids that can't tell me what 4 x 5 is without counting on their fingers in 7th grade. [ Reply | More ]

memorizine multiplication tables is something that takes place at home btw. No reason why children don't learn it, especially the children of people posing on UB [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 06.14.08, 05:43 PM Flag

Well, I'd say that I don't teach kids whose parents are all on UB. There is no expectation to do it at school. That was my simple example. Chicago math division is so difficult for students to let go of. You do traditional division for them, and they are lost. I do see the merits of these methods, but they just have to also learn what it looks like in traditional ways too. [ Reply | More ]

Is TERC lax, like they don't actually count numbers but objects, in other words, it's better for kids who won't understand math in a traditional way? my dh and I are math majors, and i think dc will probably be better with a more normal rigid math program, am I wrong? [ Reply | More ]

I'm the or from above, and this wasn't my post. These are the stats I know. With traditional math, only the top 25% really understand it. With these new techniques, the other 75% are more likely to understand the concept. The problem is translating it to traditional math, which can easily be done, but is not in many elementary schools. The kids who can't make the transition have problems in middle school and beyond. [ Reply | More ]

I'm above poster and no, I'm not middle school teacher. I tutored kids, though. Sad thing is the kids got their answers wrong and got bad grades even if they understood the conceptual part, but could NOT execute correctly due to minor mistakes. It's sad when 9th graders have to actually think about what is 9x8 and the answer doesn't come out automatically. They spend too much time on multiplication and don't have time left over to think about concept for more difficult q'ns. [ Reply | More ]

whoever said that kids should memorize the multiplication tables at home -- why shouldn't the kids learn in school. It's so much easier to have an 8 yr old have to take those timed tests with multiplication tables in school, instead of forcing them to do it at home. My sister has twins in 2 classes -- one teacher gives the multiplication tests, the other doesn't. The twin in the class that gives the tests in school doesn't have to think of the answer anymore. That's the school's job, isn't it? I'd rather spend time giving my kids enrichment in museums, reading, etc. than drilling them in multiplication facts. [ Reply | More ]

I can't respond to the last post for some reason, but you spend time out of school on rote memorization - that is why the x's tables are mainly memorized at home. Teachers don't say, ok - everyone sit down and for the next thirty minutes work on memorizing your x tables. Kwim? That is a homework skill. Always has been. [ Reply | More ]

OR above: You may "memorize" it at home, but the way kids get it to stick is to be tested on it. That's how I learned it -- in 2nd grade, it seems like every day for months we did times table tests -- a whole page of number problems where you filled in the answer, and had 5, then 4, then 3 minutes to finish them. I used to race my friends to finish first. Memorization at home is useless unless you are asked to use it alot until it becomes rote. Taking those tests takes 10 minutes and it drills those tables into you much more strongly than at home. That's all I'm saying. I find it annoying that in the public the schools the teachers don't seem to teach like they did, but parents are expected to at home. Which is fine, but if it is not reinforced at school, the parent learning is pointless. You might be able to get your kid to memorize a poem at home, but if he's never asked at school to recite it, do you think he's going to remember? With reading, it's "talk to your kid at home about the book", but then at school my kid is never asked by his teacher to answer any questions about what he reads every day, nor even write about. Sorry for the rant, but it's my biggest issue with the school, which I otherwise think is very good. [ Reply | More ]
