there is no comparison. if 116 is close to home, how could you turn that down over a transitional school? there may not be project kids in the g&t classes, but they are everywhere else...on the playground, in the lunchroom etc...i'd be careful here [ Reply | More ]

i think this is the most disgusting thing I've ever read on UB. God-forbid your precious child is in the same vicinity as a "project kid". I used to live on the block with PS 11 and the mix of kids and parents outside the school was fantastic. You're a snob. [ Reply | More ]

Sort of like one area (they have older, more charming homes with larger properties, unlike the McMansions in another area), BUT....how do you tell the difference whether the area/residents are just down to earth (but still a little sophisticated although not ostentatious) as opposed to a bit hick-ish? Don't mean to sound like a snob at all, but don't know the area or anyone there and as we're looking at several areas, this would apply to all. I recently re-read To Kill a Mockingbird. The character Scout (largely autobiographical) describes her first encounter with school. Her teacher has no idea how to meet her educational needs. It's humorous and sad. She even asks to not have her father teacher her anything else at home. Kids who score that high on the G&T test need to be with their intellectual peers and need an accelerated curriculum -- the earlier the better. However, there are some excellent websites and books that can give your more information on the benefits of specialized education for the [ Reply | More ]

Of course any test isn't perfect and these are 4 year olds they are testing. That said, our son scored within 2 points on all of the tests. And riding around on subways, talking, observing, whatever people would often comment on how 'smart' he was (since he was two or so). Well, I suppose the tests prove that he does have raw intellectual ability (largely verbal). I think, though, that it is important to respect other people's values. Whether they move to the burbs (or another neighborhood) for a better school, choose parochial or private, or choose to throw their hats into the ring for G&T placement. Everyone wants the best educational experience for their children and many, many states, towns, cities see the benefit in offering accelerated programs for gifted kids. I think all I'd like to see is a bit of respect for other's choices and values rather than implying that gifted education isn't warranted. [ Reply | More ]

The blanket fell off. etc etc. We have had a lot of change going on, but I am completley sleep deprived. It's been going on for months. Dh goes to her, talks often ends up sleeping in bed with her. I think it's rewarding her for screaming. If she just came to us (the light is on. she's not really scared) and climbed into bed that would be fine. But this heart rending screaming (that she also does when awake) is making me want to run away from home. 16 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Can you get a special sleeping bag and put it on the floor of your bedroom? Tell her you won't come and get her if she screams, but she can come and sleep in the bag whenever she wants. she has for a time slept in our room on a blow up mattress. (we had visitors) that's when the screaming started. she's only 4, so I'm not sure the whole wait a week without screaming woudl work. even so, i sort of feel that she's looking for attention (she does get plenty but clearly wants more and all that we could ever possible have to give). OP HERE... to the person who said scold, turn off lights punish... That is exactly what i do. But dh gives me such hassle for doing this. i've been trying to do this for months. dh sort of uses it as a way to get back at me when he's angry. says that i'm causing her tantrums by scolding her (altho he says I'm screaming at her). i tell her that when she wakes me up at night, i'm too tired the next day to do things with her. which is true. so we cancel our plans for ht enext day when she does it.
