I've seen several posters claim that their child "needs" a G&T program. Please tell us why the NEED is and what exactly they NEED about it. As a mom of an older dc, as well as 5 year old and 3 year old, I would argue that at this age -- going to kindergarten -- you have no idea yet what your child NEEDS. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

if you are responding to my post immediately below then I apologize if it wasn't clear--I wasn't claiming he needed a g&T, but simply saying that my frustration was resulting more from the process than the actual school choice [ Reply | More ]

I live in the burbs so I'm not part of this madness, but it seems live EVERYONE in Manhattan is applying for G&T. Are there really that many truly "gifted" children? [ Reply | More ]

They screened about 23000 kids for K&1 grade and only 3000 qualified, so no. You are just seeing those who did qualify stressing about placement [ Reply | More ]

i think that they should just do zoned schools until 3rd or 4th grade, then test for g&t, then go from there. [ Reply | More ]

I recently re-read To Kill a Mockingbird. The character Scout (largely autobiographical) describes her first encounter with school. Her teacher has no idea how to meet her educational needs. It's humorous and sad. She even asks to not have her father teacher her anything else at home. Kids who score that high on the G&T test need to be with their intellectual peers and need an accelerated curriculum -- the earlier the better. However, there are some excellent websites and books that can give your more information on the benefits of specialized education for the [ Reply | More ]

That is true, but the test the DOE gave is very flawed. That said, the dc who scored 90+ are obviously smart kids. [ Reply | More ]

Of course any test isn't perfect and these are 4 year olds they are testing. That said, our son scored within 2 points on all of the tests. And riding around on subways, talking, observing, whatever people would often comment on how 'smart' he was (since he was two or so). Well, I suppose the tests prove that he does have raw intellectual ability (largely verbal). I think, though, that it is important to respect other people's values. Whether they move to the burbs (or another neighborhood) for a better school, choose parochial or private, or choose to throw their hats into the ring for G&T placement. Everyone wants the best educational experience for their children and many, many states, towns, cities see the benefit in offering accelerated programs for gifted kids. I think all I'd like to see is a bit of respect for other's choices and values rather than implying that gifted education isn't warranted. [ Reply | More ]
