[ - ] dh and i were talking about same-sex marriage and i said its not of the govt's business to say who is ok to get married and who is not. Societal norms have changed (ie. inter-racial marriages were illegal at one point). I also stated that assuming wives were consenting and legal age, that polygamy should be legal also. I mean, why is a same sex marriage ok, but having more then one wife or husband is not. He then asked if I believe incestuous marriages should be legal if both were consenting adults (and assuming the relationship started as adults). I don't think it is the right thing to do, but I think that people tend to do so when discussing marriage because the very nature of the conversation is what is marriage, what are its boundaries, who does it apply to, at some point the law does get involved (marriage to minors, marriage to relatves) and people are trying to parce out where that line is and should be. by the way, there are a number of very practical economic policies why polygamy is illegal including how unlikely it is for a single man to be able to support that many children. In fact, in the town that was recently "raided" the average woman there uses over 700 per month in food stamps. In law school, you learn to always think about the economic implications of laws. Double standard? Hardly. Sounds like you're talking about legislation around sex, which has (as we all know) very little to do with marriage. Marriage exists in order to promote a stable community. In other words, the only reason government is involved in the personal lives of people is because those personal lives affect the state. For instance: married people are more likely to stay together, to raise children together, to form a stable unit that promotes the interests of the community. I had this same issue, although my BF had been trying for years and it took me 3 tries. We went out for dinner & I told her. She acted totally happy for me, although she may have been putting on a bit of an act to cover. I know she was genuinely happy, I just also know it had to hurt a little.
