this is not correct. Zoned schools (DOE is VERY clear about this) are as space is available. This is true even if you have no G&T issue. There was just a NY Times article about people who moved to popular zones and now can't get into their local school. [ Reply | More ]

They are guaranteed a spot if they rank all of the available options. The application indicated limited spots for most of the highly coveted programs, i.e., A, N, 116 and LL. Basically it's about an American man who fails at summiting K2 and wanders into a remote Pakistani village where they take him in and care for him. The leader of the village befriends him and the American is appalled at the dismal little "school" (if you can use that word) that serves the village. He vows to return and build a school. And, against all odds, he does. He then goes on to build more and more schools across Pakistan, and even in post 9/11 Afghanistan providing young Muslim children (boys and GIRLS) with a solid education and, for boys, an alternative to the fundamentalist madrassas which had and have been the breeding ground for the Taliban and Al Quaeda.. Do you think the "great" families aspect along with the diversity will suffer now that it's lottery only? [ Reply | More ]

It would break my heart to see the school ruined by teh DOE's well-intentioned but stupid-in-this-case lottery process. My hope is that the people who try for the lottery and end up actually accepting spots will be people who are genuinely into the school and what it offers. Plus there will still be some sibling carry-over from non-lottery families. [ Reply | More ]

I couldn't agree more with the philosophy and practices of the school. I just hope (as an entering parent) it doesn't change. [ Reply | More ]

Well, the administration is very stubborn and determined (sometimes a good thing and sometimes a bad thing) so hopefully that vision wil continue to prevail! [ Reply | More ]

MSC. Excellent program. I'd take MSC over any D3 gen ed except PS87. Only problem with MSC is the lousy afterschool program. [ Reply | More ]

I WAH so afterschool isn't a huge issue (run my own business). But would you mind elaborating? I know the afterschool program at 9 is quite excellent. [ Reply | More ]

I don't know anything about 9's afterschool. But MSC's has been described to me by several people as "a nightmare." When I was deciding between MSC and 87, that was the tipping point (I need afterschool 2x a week). Most parents either pick their kids up, or if they work, they get a sitter to take them to sports or classes elsehwere. It's basically just daycare. There's no real programming and the kids aren't well controlled. It can't compare to the super-organized ones at 87 or 75, for example, which have tons of offerings, great teachers, and solid structuring. [ Reply | More ]

Thanks. I guess I would just hire a college student or someone to take DC to afterschool activities if/when necessary. Think of the bundle I'm saving on private anyway! :) [ Reply | More ]

The afterschool at MSC is not great - some families do ACT and 92nd street Y, which do afterschool pickup there. [ Reply | More ]

OP - thanks. I guess I should look into programs that do pickup. [ Reply | More ]

We went with college student babysitters, which I liked more than the afterschool concept anyway - more downtime for dcs. [ Reply | More ]

Anytime.:-) I am also a WAHM and many parents at MSC have flexible schedules - there is always someone who can get your child in a pinch. [ Reply | More ]

Good to know, thanks. Getting more and more excited about K now. Had a really crappy experience with the whole process and can't believe our good fortune to have "won" the lottery! [ Reply | More ]
