I am seething right now. If I were to ever find out that my kid was #51 in the Anderson 99 lottery and then I met you, knowing that you applied for a seat you might not use....man I think I'd break my own personal rules of decorum and punch you in your entitled, inconsiderate face. Do you have any idea how badly some of us wanted this remarkable school for our kids? Yes, we are very lucky to have a G&T placement, but I prayed and hoped for Anderson and while I'm fine with the fact that we didn't get it, knowing that you are out there taking a seat and not even using it just makes me want to smack you. It would? What school? According to the DOE, apart from the single round of lotteries, there won't be any out-of-zone admissions to any schools except the charter/unzoned ones. [ Reply | More ]

OP is incorrect. If you do not take your slot at A, no-one else will get it. I spoke to Rosen at the DOE and she said that all programs overaccepted, expecting some attrition. So if you don't show up, no other child can take the place. I'm with seething Mom. Don't be so cavalier about slots that other parents would give an arm and a leg for. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 06.19.08, 08:01 AM Flag

np. If the DOE overaccepted then it's for the best if some people give up their spots. Otherwise the classes will be oversubscribed. And if there are openings after that, they'll be filled by dc who move here and test in over the summer, or by dc who test in for 1st grade. You need to calm down and not get so bent out of shape about other people's choices. [ Reply | More ]

But the DOE is expecting that some families decline a seat. Otherwise we would end up with more children in a classroom than it was planned. So, nobosy is missing out but the OP. [ Reply | More ]

So? And if every other family who will decline a spot for whatever reason had also made their decision and withdrawn before May 14, you'd end up with an over-enrolled K class. Don't you get it? The DOE deliberately over-accepted. Some families MUST decline their spot for the numbers to work out. Get over it. [ Reply | More ]

That's not the point. You are claiming that OP's seat could have been yours. The thing is the DOE put into consideration that people will decline a spot. So the spot that OP got does not exist. Unless your zoned school has a spot for you, you may have to stick with your initial choice. K is not mandated, so there could be a limit of 25 per class. Didn't someone post yesterday that there is a central database that keeps track of each student's school designation? That eliminates the possibility of sitting on 2 spots at once. [ Reply | More ]

Our daughter has many friends, and has developed good social skills, thanks to Felicia. -Keeps our apartment in immaculate condition and is very flexible when emergencies arise. -Extremely reliable; she has never unexpectedly missed a day of work. -Preference is to work in the Upper West Side. -Excellent references (including ourselves) I can’t emphasize how great Felicia is. I remember you from last week. I'd be very annoyed that this is still happening and tell her she needs to leave an hour earlier or whatever, even if it means hanging out in the hood of the school and having a cup of coffee or something. In fact, I'd suggest it. But the fact that this is becoming a pattern is a serious issue and you have every right to be a little more foreceful when you talk to her. (Not mean, but you know what I mean.) [ Reply | More ]

yeah, it's me again. I thought things were better but then this happens again. She just doesn't get the concept that she needs to give herself more time if she needs to be somewhere by a certain time. If I have an important morning meeting, I make a point of giving myself more than enough time to get there. [ Reply | More ]

She gets the concept, unless she's mentally disabled (given that this has happened 3 times in a week). She just doesn't want to leave enough time for it, and would rather be late to pick up ds and blame the subways. [ Reply | More ]

You need to dock her from now on if she is late. (Unless there is a major outage reported on the evening news, imho) BTW, I usually side with nannies on these things, but this is unacceptable. I remember you from last week. She needs to know that you mean business. Tell her tonight and follow-through. [ Reply | More ]

You are wimpy....don't dock when the school docks you, tell her *tonight* that she will now oe docked a half hour pay if she is late t0 pick up ds. No chances, if *I* get docked, etc. Just tell her the policy in a pleasant, matter-of-fact way. If she worked in Walmart (or any other entry leve jobs) and was consistently late, this would happen. ^^^ starting at whatever time ds is supposed to be picked up, then it is her responsibility to get there on time, just like any job. If she gets there late, then her pay should start at the time she arrives (this will send her the message). If she doesn't like it because she has to allow too much time for travel, then she can get a job closer to her home. I really don't see what her problem is. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] sorry-new at this UB- the "first date mom" again... anyway, we talked non stop and laughed and had an incredible time (over dinner) and then he walked me back home and told me again what a lovely time he had and that it it was so nice to meet me (in person-we had talked on the phone before this) and that in the next few days we should perhaps meet again...then he gave me a light kiss on the cheek and a hug... I really like him, have had a few dates in the past year, but didn't like anyone. And now I was left with this weird feeling :"Now what? Does he like me? Will he call?" IF he has not called since the date (Monday)does it really mean he's not interested? I hope not, I had such a good feeling about this...but I guess you never know. 6 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

You could argue tipping is mandatory if the cost is built into your check. It is only by having it how it is in the US today that it is consumer driven and most responsive to service. Go to a country in Europe without tipping and see what service there is like. I'll keep our style. [ Reply | More ]

i'd do private tutoring rather than go back to work. especially if your dh has good benefits at his job. i happen to think teaching is one of the best jobs if only for the schedule. but you can make so much doing private tutoring that you can probably pick up the income you want. the only thing you'll have to keep in mind is that the hours that kids are available to be tutored are the hours when there's no school. how secure is dh's job? If you want to stay home, and you're making it (even barely), I would do it, because you can always pick up work if you have to (even if you're not teaching, you could do tutoring or something, right?) But if it will cause tension in your marriage, or your dh's job is not secure and your income might be crucial, those are things to consider [ Reply | More ]

np: another wohm who agrees with this. I had the option of taking a job when ds was 18 months old, but I decided not to, and got another opportunity when he was 2 and 1/2. It was a good year, and it was easier for me to leave ds when he was older. But your dc will be fine either way; it's really about you (or for me, that was true, that I was happy with my daycare options, and I just wanted an extra year for myself, to slow down my life a little while dc were young) [ Reply | More ]
