We're taking our citywide spot but may give it up by the time school starts and just stick with zone school. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Chill. UB was and continues to be a NY phenom. The General Board was added bc some many people lived in boring cities with few UB postings. [ Reply | More ]

if there's a WHOLE subset for NYC schools, why don't you just send this to those who care! [ Reply | More ]

I am seething right now. If I were to ever find out that my kid was #51 in the Anderson 99 lottery and then I met you, knowing that you applied for a seat you might not use....man I think I'd break my own personal rules of decorum and punch you in your entitled, inconsiderate face. Do you have any idea how badly some of us wanted this remarkable school for our kids? Yes, we are very lucky to have a G&T placement, but I prayed and hoped for Anderson and while I'm fine with the fact that we didn't get it, knowing that you are out there taking a seat and not even using it just makes me want to smack you. OP: Whoa. You have some serious issues, lady. If we give up the seat August 31, another child will get the seat. I'm dealing with figuring out the commute issues (NOT going to put my 5 yo on a school bus for 45 min. x2 a day!!!) and what's best for our family. So I would punch you back in your entitled, bitter face. [ Reply | More ]

No, you are wrong. There are no waitlists. You stole the spot from another kid. You should have figured out the commute before teh deadline for preferences was due. You had plenty of time to figure this out. Your situation is not special. We all have 5 year olds. Suck it up a-hole. [ Reply | More ]

OP: no one is "entitled" to a spot at Anderson. No one. We got lucky. And since we have the spot we can do whatever we want with it. [ Reply | More ]

though I would ad that if you are going to give it up, do it sooner rater than later so if spot goes to another family, they aren't scrambling at the last minute to deal with after school, drop off/pick up/etc. good karma to do it sooner rather than later [ Reply | More ]

yes - and we're working on doing it as soon as possible. his spot at zoned school would be open for an out-of-zone family too so I feel the pressure on both sides! [ Reply | More ]

It would? What school? According to the DOE, apart from the single round of lotteries, there won't be any out-of-zone admissions to any schools except the charter/unzoned ones. [ Reply | More ]

OP is incorrect. If you do not take your slot at A, no-one else will get it. I spoke to Rosen at the DOE and she said that all programs overaccepted, expecting some attrition. So if you don't show up, no other child can take the place. I'm with seething Mom. Don't be so cavalier about slots that other parents would give an arm and a leg for. [ Reply | More ]

np. If the DOE overaccepted then it's for the best if some people give up their spots. Otherwise the classes will be oversubscribed. And if there are openings after that, they'll be filled by dc who move here and test in over the summer, or by dc who test in for 1st grade. You need to calm down and not get so bent out of shape about other people's choices. [ Reply | More ]

I agree with you. The OP is obnoxious for being so cavalier when so many wonderful kids don't have the option she is ready to give up. [ Reply | More ]

Actually, A families should be happy there are people like OP. Otherwise, there would be 28-30 kids in the class. [ Reply | More ]

But the DOE is expecting that some families decline a seat. Otherwise we would end up with more children in a classroom than it was planned. So, nobosy is missing out but the OP. [ Reply | More ]

Had the OP made this decision before May 14, some other family would have that seat. [ Reply | More ]

yes, maybe THAT seat but another one would have gone away. You understand that this discussion doesn't make much sense, right? [ Reply | More ]

So? And if every other family who will decline a spot for whatever reason had also made their decision and withdrawn before May 14, you'd end up with an over-enrolled K class. Don't you get it? The DOE deliberately over-accepted. Some families MUST decline their spot for the numbers to work out. Get over it. [ Reply | More ]

yes, because statistically seen some families will decline a seat. That's why the DOE over-accepted. This is a better approach than doing wait lists. [ Reply | More ]

You are clueless. The seats that people are going to give up did not exist in the first place in order to compensate for people like OP. I hope your kid is smarter than you are. [ Reply | More ]

Would I rather my child be the 26th in a designated class of 25 at Anderson than have to do an hour commute each way to NEST? Yes, I would. How does that make me clueless? [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 06.19.08, 08:56 AM Flag

That's not the point. You are claiming that OP's seat could have been yours. The thing is the DOE put into consideration that people will decline a spot. So the spot that OP got does not exist. Btw, this process is not about you as individual. You can argue as much as you want but when you look at the big picture it all worked out just fine. [ Reply | More ]

The big picture is that all NYC parents want to get the best education for their kids. [ Reply | More ]

Of course. But it has to come with compromises because there are more than 1 million children in NYC's school system. If you need your own individual wishes/wants/needs fulfilled without compromises NYC is not the place for you to be (or go private). [ Reply | More ]

Unless your zoned school has a spot for you, you may have to stick with your initial choice. K is not mandated, so there could be a limit of 25 per class. Didn't someone post yesterday that there is a central database that keeps track of each student's school designation? That eliminates the possibility of sitting on 2 spots at once. [ Reply | More ]

true, but very few kindergartens are turning away students. the vast majority of schools will take a kid that shows up the first day of school. [ Reply | More ]
