Basically it's about an American man who fails at summiting K2 and wanders into a remote Pakistani village where they take him in and care for him. The leader of the village befriends him and the American is appalled at the dismal little "school" (if you can use that word) that serves the village. He vows to return and build a school. And, against all odds, he does. He then goes on to build more and more schools across Pakistan, and even in post 9/11 Afghanistan providing young Muslim children (boys and GIRLS) with a solid education and, for boys, an alternative to the fundamentalist madrassas which had and have been the breeding ground for the Taliban and Al Quaeda.. Anytime. I just finished it and highly recommend it to anyone in need of a good read. But it really does put all the petty NYC BS into a whole different light. [ Reply | More ]

It was such a great book - I really loved it! And yes, it does help to put in perspective how anyone almost anywhere in the world can get a good education if they want it badly enough. [ Reply | More ]
