Have a 5 mo. ds and 2 cats; we were similarly anxious but it didn't turn out to be a problem. For the first two weeks we shut the cats out of the room when he was sleeping (he was in our room), and then when we decided that the cats were uninterested in him, we just made sure that they didn't have an easy way to jump into the bassinet and allowed them back into the room while we were there. They never tried to jump in when he was in the bassinet, and only gave it a shot a few times when he was out. Now DS is in his own room and the cats remain pretty indifferent to him. [ Reply | More ]

We have two cats and used a crib tent for safety. I noticed that when the zipper is down my cats will jump into the crib. My Son is 1.5 now, and we are expecting another child and will continue to use it. I think it's great. My Son is tall for his age and without the crib tent could easily climb out of his crib, so it serves a dual purpose! [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] DC accepted to NEST for 1st grade next year. doing well in K in terms of math, but the gen ed is not at all accelerated. How much of 1st grade curriculum has been taught to K students, and how to prepare dc over the summer so that she is at same place as peers? Also, are programs like Kumon and Score good places for this sort of thing? 8 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Sorry but Nest IS accelerated. In fact, on the tour Nest principal said that if a child excels in a certain subject they will move to higher grade for that subject. Ex. if a 2nd grader excels at math, this kid will go into the 4th grade class for math only and return to his/ her 2nd grade class for the rest of the day. This is something I really liked about the school but my 99 DC is going to district G&T instead. [ Reply | More ]

Let her enjoy the summer. My dc just finished kindergarten this year at Nest. I have several friends who have their kid in gen ed in my neighborhood. It didn't seem like the work was that much different. I was just finishing up the math book tonight and the kdis are working on adding, subtraction and applying that to money in increments of pennies, nickels, and dimes. Don't sweat it. The result of a life spent paying off debt is that I have no idea what to do with this money. I've done some reading but I find it all too confusing. Dh is just as bad. Any thoughts here? Financial planner here. You need to meet with a planner to look at your overall picture. A big mistake a lot of young couples with kids make is to shortchange their long-term retirement savings for the college funds or every day expenses. $40k may not sound like a lot now but if you invest wisely for the long haul it could be a great nest egg for you. Don't try to do it yourselves in markets like these! [ Reply | More ]

really depends on where you live. Where I am, I pay $1900 a month rent, same house would be about $4000 morgage/tax/insurance, not including maintenance. Only buy if you are only paying slightly more than renting would cost, otherwise it's probably a bubble. Also don't buy if everything around is tanking fast. My friend bought last year, same time we moved into rental, and she's lost 30% of the value already.... [ Reply | More ]

and don't let all the homeowners around you pressure you. They are scared that it's going to keep going down, so they will keep talking up homeownership because if more people buy they feel more secure. I went to a party yesterday where everyone was moaning about how much prices have fallen, but as soon as I say I am renting, they all try to convince me that this is the right time to buy. I don't see how that can be true if there is a ton on the market that isn't selling... [ Reply | More ]
