I'm so frustrated. For the first time we're out of debt. Have approx $40K that we need to get out of savings and into something productive. The result of a life spent paying off debt is that I have no idea what to do with this money. I've done some reading but I find it all too confusing. Dh is just as bad. Any thoughts here? We don't need access to this money so can do long-term investment. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Financial planner here. You need to meet with a planner to look at your overall picture. A big mistake a lot of young couples with kids make is to shortchange their long-term retirement savings for the college funds or every day expenses. $40k may not sound like a lot now but if you invest wisely for the long haul it could be a great nest egg for you.
