[ - ] Was trying to stay out of it but just saw a post that infuriated me criticizing PS 166's G&T. I know there are issues w/ the admin as with other schools, but have to say the critics sound like parents who'll only be happy with Anderson. My high 90s child was placed there years ago, and it has been wonderful. The teachers are attentive and know him well; she has blossomed into a curious and amazing reader (who knew? we thought numbers were her thing but were told recently she's reading at 5th grade level and she's in 2nd) and has made great friends. The parents are dedicated and supportive. It's not perfect--tons of fundraising work, some politicking--but nothing worse than what we experienced at Anderson when older dc was there. (FWIW, that school was also great, and not as pressured as everyone makes it sound.) 16 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

One of the posters said it herself: they are entitled edu-snobs. These are probably people who prefer private schools but were shut out or didn't get into the TT schools their kids "deserve". Thanks you for this. Sending a child to 166 g&t next year and do not relish meeting the parent who keeps posting here that her child is far too gifted for this lowly program. For what it's worth, I can tell it's the same bitter person posting over and over again. I wish she'd send her child to another program that she deems worthy, so that her negativity wouldn't be at 166. [ Reply | More ]

Yeah, I think your (our) wish has been granted. According to a previous post it seems like the bitter 166 mom didn't accept the spot: "We were not happy with our placement so we are going to stay in pre-K another year and then move or go private." Less negativity and a better student-teacher ratio for our kids. [ Reply | More ]

I have two dds in the 166 G&T (finishing 1st and 4th) and we LOVE it. the families are all really nice and friendly, seem to range from lower middle to upper middle class, and my dds both love school and learn a lot. the principal unfortunately has poor communication skills (and has made a few unpopular decisions regaring the wonderful teachers), but is far from the worst in my opinion. the teachers are all AMAZING and the curriculum is pretty good. D26 in Queens is one of the best in NYC. But of course there are schools with lots of 100% passing: Anderson, NEST & Lower Lab (if you remove the Special Ed kids' scores) have more 100%s but they're G&T schools. As for gen ed schools, you may have to go to similarly wealthy neighborhoods like Great Neck in LI (3 miles away) or Scarsdale. [ Reply | More ]

did you read the note to the editor. The reality is that there were a lot of minorites in gifted programs that were actually in the 10th percentile. As a minority, with a 98%, I am glad that when she goes to school this year in a District G&T no one will be wondering about it. I do hope that there is some type of program that better handles or bridges the gap for hispanics and blacks so that next year there are more qualifiers and improvements on the state tests as well. General Topics 06.26.08, 04:48 AM Flag

I know, it was not asked, and it is not always obvious during testing either so while testers could have noted it, sometimes names could have given it away but all that is just guessing. I think DOE would have asked for that info if they were planning to assign spots based on it. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 06.26.08, 06:35 AM Flag

I think the issue is that admissions being blind to race lowered minority representation this year because they (the DOE/schools) could not pick minority students to diversify classes. I think the goal for next year, of testing every kid in the system was a great idea and would have done a lot to increase minority representation in G&T programs. [ Reply | More ]
