How do you think it happened if you believe what the NYTimes article said about the desperate impact blind testing had on minorities? Minority 99s given priority to Anderson? Not sure I have a view one way or another on it, but I'm not sure that is legal anymore. [ Reply | More ]

did you read the note to the editor. The reality is that there were a lot of minorites in gifted programs that were actually in the 10th percentile. As a minority, with a 98%, I am glad that when she goes to school this year in a District G&T no one will be wondering about it. I do hope that there is some type of program that better handles or bridges the gap for hispanics and blacks so that next year there are more qualifiers and improvements on the state tests as well. I'm confused. So people will know your DD scored a 98%? [ Reply | More ]

People will know that there was a standard this year that was not there before. ANyone in a G&T class this year will be above the 90th%. It is not based on "varying district cutoffs, which led to lower-scoring students gaining admission." [ Reply | More ]

The letter says "some" minorities were in the 10th percentile in the past--not a lot. [ Reply | More ]

I still don't understand how admissions/test results could have been impacted by race -- it was never asked for! unless the testers were required to note it somewhere? [ Reply | More ]

I know, it was not asked, and it is not always obvious during testing either so while testers could have noted it, sometimes names could have given it away but all that is just guessing. I think DOE would have asked for that info if they were planning to assign spots based on it. [ Reply | More ]

I think the issue is that admissions being blind to race lowered minority representation this year because they (the DOE/schools) could not pick minority students to diversify classes. I think the goal for next year, of testing every kid in the system was a great idea and would have done a lot to increase minority representation in G&T programs. [ Reply | More ]

^^^FWIW- I think this was true for boys this year, too. [ Reply | More ]

Most privates are more diverse than Anderson and this year that is even more true. But your dc will get a good education. Congrats on the accceptance [ Reply | More ]

I don't think that's true. The privates we saw had maybe 4-5 diverse kids per class, which is about what Anderson and UES/UWS G&Ts have too. [ Reply | More ]

true for socioeconomic all grades and race for upper grades because of prep for prep most likely-very few privates are truly diverse in lower schools [ Reply | More ]

you have no idea what you are talking about. Anderson is very very diverse this year and last. the olsat truly increased diversity at least at this citywide. the SB/ERB criteria kept people out. Joel klein is doing something right [ Reply | More ]

I am a parent there. I have seen the new K class. it is very diverse. not sure what study you are citing, but this class and last year's are far more diverse than my dc's in upper grade. [ Reply | More ]

Don't fool yourself. As a long time Anderson parent I can tell you that the school community is not diverse. Yes, the current K and 1st grades have more diversity than the upper grades, but if you are looking for a diverse community within to educate your child go somewhere else. Anderson is primarily white and Asian. [ Reply | More ]

Are you one of the parents who have been working the past few years (before this year's DOE admissions change) to increase outreach in order to increase diversity at Anderson? [ Reply | More ]

the old system favored whites and asians. the fact that the incoming K and 1st grade classes are so diverse is a testament to the new system changing things. anderson is becoming more diverse thanks to joel klein [ Reply | More ]

Diverse? Anderson? Oh, I see, you're one of those people who thinks 10% minority makes a school diverse. [ Reply | More ]
