don't worry. Just enjoy your pg then just do your homework. Get to know the process but when you will apply, get off UB because I have read so many untruths or exaggerations on here about the process and the schools [ Reply | More ]

It is terrifying. Having just gone through it I can tell you it is very stressful. But try to keep a level head. Maybe by the time your dc is five there will be more schools, public and private to look at. Don't worry about it now though [ Reply | More ]

That doesn't have to be you--it's not me. We can't afford private so right away I'm not worrying about that. I think G&T is a crock, and we're in a decent zone for elementary so I'm not obsessing about it. [ Reply | More ]

I'm not so sure. We gave up some things in order to live here. The people I know who don't live in decent zones didn't really try. And, to be clear, we're not in an marquee zone--just a decent one. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] hello all, I am honestly looking for some advice here, not to start any ideological threads. I have never posted on this board. I live in the east village (D1). Is it completely naive to think that I can send dc to a non-TT regular affordable neighborhood pre-school and then apply to the public schools like neighborhood and earth school and NEST as a total long shot as a schooling plan? He is only 13 months so I am trying to think ahead. I would be so grateful for any insight from those who have gone through this process, and any opinions on these schools. 9 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

another D1 mom here. I don't see what's wrong with your plan. The only issue with the first 2 schools is that they are lottery schools and NEST is by entrance exam (or you may not like it for your dc by then) [ Reply | More ]

it's not a long shot. my son went to a daycare/preschool on upper west side. not very well known at all. tood the olsat and got a 99 ( and also got a 99 on weschler -not sure how to spell- that he had to take for something else), and got into a good distric 3 g & t. he did not get into a citywide, although i only applied to anderson as i live way uptown. but don't see why you couldn't do the same for downtown, apply to nest, or good district school. you have just see what happens. it doesn't matter what preschool you go to if you are going to public - as long as you are happy w/ the vibe and learning style of the preschool. OP: thank you for these quick replies! A follow-up question--at what age did you start pre-school? I understand that many people start at age 2 to get into TT preschools, but is 3 or 4 OK if you are not trying to get on that track? Do you think preschool is necessary/good for the kids or could you substitute classes and active play and reading to dc at home? [ Reply | More ]

It really depends on your dc, when they are ready usually around 3. Both My dc's started (a non name)preschool at 3 and one is in TT and one select public [ Reply | More ]

I'm a D1 mom whose son went to "ordinary" neighborhood preschool and tested into a G&T program. we also found the gen ed "lottery" schools to be very good (earth, neighborhood, east village community). We are going to G&T at 110, which looks to be a fabulous school, it has a brand new library and computer lab and is beautiful, albeit in an out-of-the way location by the Williamsburn bridge.
