obviously, do what you're most comfortable with. but in general, the midwifery model of care presumes a normal, healthy pregnancy and birth in a normal, healthy woman, while the obstetric model seems to really be tuned into finding pathology where there is none. I don't think doctors are bad, just unnecessary for most normal, healthy women. just make sure you educate yourself before you decide. congrats and good luck! [ Reply | More ]

Well, what's the chronic medical condition? In my experience as a healthcare professional, most people who have "years of pain" (as opposed to an acute episode of pain reltaed to a specific injury)are overweight - the extra weight puts stress on their joints and their backs and they suffer from depression which can exacerbate their perception of pain. If it's "fibromyalgia" you have, the studies are inconclusive that it is even a real disease and the average patient is overweight (183 pounds as cited in The New York times not too long ago). I've watched my brother's 4 children cycle out of control into completely dysfunctional peopel because theier mother was "in pain" all the time and self-medicated on a daily basis. Don't do it, for your kids' sake. [ Reply | More ]

Wow, you are judgmental and mean. I don't have great muscle tone, but I am actually very thin, the pain reduces my appetite. And I don't have fibromyalgia, and am now not inclined to share any details because you will undoubtedly find fault with whatever it is. I am not self-medicated, I am under the care of several doctors including a pain specialist. I worry greatly about the effect of all my surgeries and hospitalizations on my kids. My DH and I try very hard to create as normal a life as we can, it's one of the reasons I do not take my recommended medications. [ Reply | More ]

nnp: please dont' listen to this miserable individual who is just playing Dr on UB but is really a TROLL. I understand your pain. I have been suffering with chronic pains for 20 yrs now. Started with chronic migraines at 20yr old then a few yrs later an assault led to a spinal injury (more pain), spinal fusion surgery which led into a 6mo recovery but also developed RSD because of the surgery..and this turned into spinal arthritis...all of these chronic conditional with no cures but just you learn to live with it. I can't take the pain meds because I wouldn't function with my kids..so I deal. I know your pain..so please don't give up. What I did learn is that if you let the pain control you then you lost. I know it's easier said than done but believe me..fight through it and don't give up looking for alternatives [ Reply | More ]

I'm curious exactly what kind of "healthcare professional" you are: you are either a fraud or should be embarassed by your ignorance. Its basic knowledge that there are multiple kinds of pain- bone, neuropathic, central, etc which are chronic and have NOTHING to do with weight, and this is common knowledge. In MY experience as a "healthcare professional" (neurologist who treats chronic pain every day) people on UB who say they are in the healthcare profession and then blurt out some diagnosis usually aren't. [ - ] A thought on the "cash for wedding gift" issue below, fwiw. Some friends of ours asked for cash for their wedding and got it. They were recently at our house for dinner, and kept saying how they loved our china and silver or whatever, and asked when we got all this stuff. I said for our wedding, we registered for it. And they said they wished they'd done the same because they just put the $ in their bank acct and can't remember at all what they spent it on. They wished they had registered for things that were nice/lasting and they would remember. The wife was lamenting how she knew they would never buy expensive stuff like that for themselves, so they'll just never have it. I love that I have the crystal from my father (he just passed), the china dh's grandma got us (also no longer with us), the platter from my inlaws, etc. to have forever. 5 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]
