[ - ] I'm confused. Many people here say there is no correlation between early reading and intelligence. But I definitely see a lot of kids who score high on ERBs and get into TTs or who are going to Hunter, and can read, whereas most kids entering K do not. Anyone else think there is more of a connection than people here acknowledge? 15 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

for what it's worth, have decided no correltation between early reading and successfully moving through life. used to want dd to score high on tests because thought a place in T&G would open doors and guarantee her becoming educated to succeed later in life. then recenly met 3 people who were all reading before Kindergarten and who had each made miserable messes of their lives (think divorces, IT "genius" who worked in 1 not particularly innovate place for 20 and now has no marketable career skills when 20 year place downsized and lost job, horribly dysfunctional and sad marriages and children) [ Reply | More ]

Most dc who enter Hunter and TT cannot read. Maybe more can than in other schools, but most cannot. There is a correlation, but it is weak and there is no correlation b/t late reading and average or lower IQ. The strongest correlation is between early math skills and intelligence. [ Reply | More ]

I actually read an interesting article in the St. Pete times that said that there is not necessarily any correlation between early reading and intelligence, and that in fact many early readers do not actually understand the phonics behind the words and that it is more word recognition than it is actual reading or comprehension. It also said that children who read early do not do better academically than children who read around 6 or 7 -- in fact, the older readers often do better. Of course, I am not saying that this is the case with your early readers specifically or all early readers, but these are what some studies are showing. [ Reply | More ]

^^^also, I think you have to look at whether there is a correlation between kids scoring high on these tests at 4 and how well they do throughout their academic careers. Those tests may or may not be accurate predictors of "intelligence." Also, there can be a difference between intelligence and performing well in school. It's actually much broader than what I've seen discussed on these boards. I don't have a school aged child, btw, so I am not saying any of this out of "bitterness." [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I posted yesterday about feeling conflicted about giving my nanny a reference. On the one hand, I am bothered by some things. On the other, I want her to be able to get a job. Well, it turns out that she got a job w/o a reference from me. Her new employer hired her and didn't bother calling me. Saved me from lying or badmouthing my nanny. 10 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Yikes. Someone hired a nanny without speaking with her current employer first? Just an observation, but some people spend a lot of time trashing nannys, but apparently there are some parents who hire them without a lot of thought, which makes me think they don't care a whole lot about the nanny's behavior. I personally know of one particularly grievous example where the parents ignored multiple reports of extreme borderline abusive behavior and continued to employ the nanny because it was "easier" than hiring a new one. [ Reply | More ]

no. children at this age should be in charge of the play when they are playing with adults. the adult's role is to become a participant in the child's world, imho. not talking about when they are wanting to do something dangerous or anything like that, of course. ita that he is saying please, which is great. he's strong-willed and has definite opinions. her label of him as "bossy" would concern me. yes, but, when you are sick, you want to be able to go to the specialist you want to go to - not have to go to whomever the insurance company tells you you can see. and, if the plan has a maximum that the insurance pays, then a serious illness can bankrupt you in a very short period of time.
