[ - ] my kids are with their dad on vacation at his moms house for the week. 7 yo dd called last night crying to say that her 14 y.o. cousin told her how awful I am and that I broke her dad's heart when we got divorced. We have been divorced for over a year. he lives around the corner and we are very amicable and the kids have adjusted great. she was crying and asking me why they think I am so horrible. All of the adults were obviously sitting around bashing me at one point and they 14yo let my dd know what they were saying. i am so livid. her father and i never bad mouth each other. 5 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

wow! That hurts. Sounds like you and ex-dh have done a great job holding it together for the sake of your kids, keeping things amicable. It's really ashame that the 14yo had to get involved. I assume the 14 yo cousin is a girl? Girls at that can be a rough, nosy lot and she was probably just trying to stick up for her uncle. It still sucks for your 7 yo though. [ Reply | More ]

ugh, I'm sorry, that's awful. Can you talk to 7 yo about mean things that people say and how you have to be happy with yourself, or whatever- make it some kind of life lesson about mean girls and how to deal with them? A 14 yo should absolutely know better than to say something like that, but intervening with dh's family will probably only compound the problem. [ Reply | More ]

some babies are like that. my second would NOT take pacifier or suck thumb. drove me out of my mind. he nursed like crazy for first six months. i pumped as much as i could, in addition. you can't let a 7 week old cry, you have to do the best you can. maybe she'll start sucking her thumb once she's coordinated enough. my daughter sucked her thumb and it made everything so much easeir, once she got the hang of it. Neither of my kids ever used a pacifier or adopted a transitional object. Both slept in a family bed and nursed on demand for the first year with occasional comfort nursing thereafter. Both used the potty when they decided to as opposed to on anyone else's scheduled. Both continue to be strong, self-directed, confident, seek the counsel of their parents. They are both top students at the two most selective public schools in the city. Entering their teens, neither needs to suck to sleep or uses a family bed. They're normal, healthy (very healthy), well-adjusted kids. I attribute a lot of their success to their confidence that we will always be there for them. That started with nursing all the time. Get good at nursing baby in a sling. Buy motherwear shirts & dresses. Relax. [ Reply | More ]

Please explain. Why can't your children nurse on demand at least at night, sleep in your bed, or what not? This is indeed possible for most families if they wanted it. don't go in and then leave. either pick him up or just stay out. i really think that's the only way to go. it's horrible horrible horrible to listen to your kid cry, but after a couple nights, it stops and you ahve a kid who sleeps thru the night. if you or your son are not ready for this, then put it off for another month. i did it when my dd was 8 mos and when my son was 11mos, but every kid/parent is different. no offense, but you are picky! Not that you shouldn't be when naming your kid, but your reasons are odd. [ Reply | More ]
