[ - ] any know of childbirth prep classes that are only 1-3 sessions and not multi-week marathos? i'm delivering at NYU and their childbirth classes are for 5 weeks/3 hours or 7 weeks/2 hours. am looking for a shorter program. even real birth is for 3 hours for 4 weeks. and for those of you who have taken them, did you find it worth it? i just find the idea of 3 hours for 4-5 weeks really daunting. 28 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I know there are places that do one intensive weekend day class. I found our classes very useful -- not so much for me (there wasn't a lot that I hadn't already read about or learned from friends), but for DH. It was quite an eye-opener for him, and I think it made him a more supportive and less freaked out birth partner. [ Reply | More ]

We were the same way - DH had never changed a diaper before DD arrived. We did a standard childbirth prep series (4 2-hour classes) and a breastfeeding class at real birth, and that was fine for us. [ Reply | More ]

I would take a hospital tour so you know where to go. FWIW, we didn't take a class and I can't see how it would have helped. I experienced pain like never before, phoned the OB who said it sounded like labor, DH flagged a cab, we went to the hospital, I got an epidural, the doctor called the shots and even if I didn't like it I was in no position to argue, we had a baby. DH was really helpful. [ Reply | More ]

I feel like a lot of what people compete for has more to do with families that are going to stay in the city, etc. At the same time, I want ds to have som etype of "school" experience. Right now his grandma is his nanny and they do a baby class once a week. Money definitely IS an object, though, so I'm wondering what my options are. TIA 11 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

there are also 3s programs that aren't $15k/yr. rhinelander is a children's aid society preschool on the UES, but the 3s program is typically filled with sibs, and it's a very small school. costs about $10k. (it's still competitive admissions, though not as competitive as others.) there are also FCFS preschools, but they are typically quite expensive, as they are for-profit. there is children's aid society downtown, which is FCFC -- not sure of the cost. as the other poster said, ther are preschool alternative programs for 3s, but while admissions aren't competitive, like FCFS preschools, they too aren't cheap (though not $15k a year -- but still, probably between $7-10k for a full school year). There are so many different types of preschools and also preschool alternatives out there. Maybe do a search to see what is available in your local area and start narrowing it down from there. [ - ] i need a quick vegetarian pasta dish. sick of my standbys, which include pasta with roasted tomatoes, mozzarella, corn and basil; pasta with a sauce made of ricotta and pasta water and peas; and the same except with goat cheese, zuchinni and lemon. any ideas? thanks. 8 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

pesto! i also do 1. tomato sauce flavored with rosemary, pureed with chick peas, and more whole chickpeas added; tomato sauce plus canned cammelini or kidney beans (or both); 3.raw tomato sauce, made with tomatoes, olive oil, balsamic, garlic, and fresh herbs. also try roasted peppers, or zucchini sliced very thin and sautedd in oil with garlic. you can also do fresh herbs cooked in olive oil, but not a lot of kids wil eat it. oh, adn veggie lasagna or baked ziti with vegetables ( i like to use peppers or broccoli). adn i often toss in veggies with pesto or even blend some peas into it. [ Reply | More ]

op: i don't in the least. i am kind of pissed b/c my sister said she is having her 7yo tested because that might explain why he cannot focus. i know i should have kept quiet, but i got pissed and told her it was ludicrous (not those exact words), and that she should stop trying to label her child by getting him tested for all kinds of conditions.
