less than 50% of actual spots -- sometimes a lot less (Trinity, St. Ann's). Hard to quantify further, as it depends on school and the preference given to sibs/legs/other connected people. [ Reply | More ]

Have you gone through the process? All of the popular schools had at least 50% of the spots already spoken for this past year. St. Ann's had something like 6 spots for unconnected applicants (out of 60). Many schools have pre-K's, so spots fill up that way as well. [ Reply | More ]

you could actually leave her in preschool - if she is shut out when you find out in March enroll her in K immediately (they will take her unless its a hot school and I suspect its PS59.) Two people in our general ed did that this year and it worked out great. If your dd is as bright as you say - she will catch up to the others quickly and then go to first with no problem (if she can't cut it - the school will see this and then ask her to repeat K and its fine too) [ Reply | More ]

Huh? If you look at the social security list of most popular names for the last 100 years, the boys names don't vary that much but they are not those names at all. Then the girls names change with the times. Helen, Mary... those were big; then Barbara;... now Eva, Sophie, Emma... [ Reply | More ]

If youve ever worked in retail, you would know that many wealthy mexicans come here to shop and have been for a long time. They also almost always use cash. The point is, retailers that trade in areas which benefit from tourist shopping are at an advantage, since our own citizens are not shopping [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Argh. Trying to name this kid is driving me mad. It was so easy to pick a name for ds1, but ds2 is just impossible. DH must have fallen asleep watching Thomas the Tank Engine -- his latest list of names he'll consider includes Thomas, Henry, Edward, and James. He even mentioned Percy the other day. Boy names are hard! Picking a name for our daughter was a piece of cake by comparison. There just aren't that many boy names that I like, so finding one that we both like is tough. Plus, all the names that I do like are either an ex-bf's name or already in use in the family or have become super-trendy in the last few years. [ Reply | More ]
