I have a super bright dd who is winding up in gen ed for reasons too lengthy to explain. [Among them, she has a winter birthday so I was not able to apply to privates yet.] Since I don't expect to like the public school she is going to, I am going to apply to 3 privates. (Very high 90s ERBs) Which ones should I look at? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

well, since you've already made up your mind that you're going to dislike your public choice...seriously, do you really expect people to be able to pick three, random privates for you out of a hat? do some research, and then ask for opinions. [ Reply | More ]

OP -- I toured our public and went to an open house. I didn't just "make up my mind" I investigated it and hated it. Happy? [ Reply | More ]

np: wow, you are WAY to defensive lady. If you want some advice, 1st be nicer, 2nd- you have to tell us more about your DD. Sporty, girly girly, shy, outgoing, likes to read? you know, stuff like that. [ Reply | More ]

There are girls fitting all those descriptions at all the schools. The old "girly girls to Chapin, outgoing girls to Spence" is a bunch of BS. [ Reply | More ]

Why are you sending dd there then? Just keep her in preschool. [ Reply | More ]

if you really want private, you need to apply to more. High ERBs are no guarantee. [ Reply | More ]

My dd had 99x3 two years ago. I applied to 7 schools. Psd recommended 8. And that was in a slightly less competitive admissions climate. If I were to apply out this year with the same score, I'd apply to 9 (minimum). B, S, C, CSH, MM, NBS, Dalton, HM and maybe Riverdale. [ Reply | More ]

Why are you sending her to public K at all? Just stay in preschool and apply to privates from there if you know you are going to hate it. Applying to 3 schools is not a sound strategy. [ Reply | More ]

np: because you risk having to skip K if dc isn't accepted. And if you aren't interested in a ton of schools, the risk is too great. [ Reply | More ]

I would agree with that if OP was coming to the public with an open mind. But she already decided she hates it, so it is a bad plan and guarantee dd will have a miserable year. [ Reply | More ]

you could actually leave her in preschool - if she is shut out when you find out in March enroll her in K immediately (they will take her unless its a hot school and I suspect its PS59.) Two people in our general ed did that this year and it worked out great. If your dd is as bright as you say - she will catch up to the others quickly and then go to first with no problem (if she can't cut it - the school will see this and then ask her to repeat K and its fine too) [ Reply | More ]
