Is it possible to be autistic or on the spectrum when you are extremely verbal, social and affectionate? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

If it isn't now, it will be soon. The spectrum keeps getting bigger and bigger. [ Reply | More ]

op: i don't in the least. i am kind of pissed b/c my sister said she is having her 7yo tested because that might explain why he cannot focus. i know i should have kept quiet, but i got pissed and told her it was ludicrous (not those exact words), and that she should stop trying to label her child by getting him tested for all kinds of conditions. there is no "test" for autism. you can be evaluated, but not tested. [ Reply | More ]

I think some of the sensory integration disorders may be "on the spectrum", and you can still be social and affectionate. But I'm no expert. [ Reply | More ]

Does not sound like autism, but could be issue involving ADD/ADHD, a learning disability, language processing, or nothing at all except personality type. Let your sister parent as she sees fit, if they find something maybe they can id a strategy to help. [ Reply | More ]

op: he is already diagnosed as add, which i can totally believe. he also has chronic medical issues, which are real. but apparently, that's not enough for her. of course she is going to parent as she sees fit, but it doesn't mean i have to agree. [ Reply | More ]

no. by definition, if you understand and engage in "normal" social interaction, you are not on the spectrum. a social and appropriately affectionate child is not on the spectrum. [ Reply | More ]

Read "Born on a Blue Day." The author has Aspergers syndrome and has learned how to lead a relatively normal life. [ Reply | More ]
