any know of childbirth prep classes that are only 1-3 sessions and not multi-week marathos? i'm delivering at NYU and their childbirth classes are for 5 weeks/3 hours or 7 weeks/2 hours. am looking for a shorter program. even real birth is for 3 hours for 4 weeks. and for those of you who have taken them, did you find it worth it? i just find the idea of 3 hours for 4-5 weeks really daunting. hopefully not a c-section and i'd prefer not to be induced or be given pitosin, but i'm all about the epidural or other pain killers. [ Reply | More ]

Then to be honest, you don't really need to take a class. I read a lot. I watched baby story a lot (bedbound) and was fine [ Reply | More ]

NP: ITA. I found the classes to be rather useless. [ Reply | More ]

np: i sort of agree, but OP might want a calss any way 1. to be prepared(and for her DH to kow what to expect) and 2. in case the epidural doesn't come as fast as she wants it or work. [ Reply | More ]

I know there are places that do one intensive weekend day class. I found our classes very useful -- not so much for me (there wasn't a lot that I hadn't already read about or learned from friends), but for DH. It was quite an eye-opener for him, and I think it made him a more supportive and less freaked out birth partner. [ Reply | More ]

i have heard that from others as well. my husband has ZERO experience with babies. never even held one. do you think a one time newborn care class would be okay or would it be better to just suck it up and do one that's a whole series? [ Reply | More ]

We were the same way - DH had never changed a diaper before DD arrived. We did a standard childbirth prep series (4 2-hour classes) and a breastfeeding class at real birth, and that was fine for us. [ Reply | More ]

I posted below and I think it's worth it to take the series so that DH has a clue what's happening when it's happening. It's really not a waste of time or money. [ Reply | More ]

Have the courage to skip them. My birth went nothing like I hoped/planned/expected and frankly when you are pushing out a baby you are not concerned with whether you are in the active or trnaisitonal stage of labor. [ Reply | More ]

np: I agree and yet, I think it's nice to know you took the class and didn't miss anything. If you don't take the class, you may feel like the labor would have been better with it. I read a lot and didn't really learn much from the classes, BUT my husband did, so that made it well worth it. [ Reply | More ]

We are doing the intensive weekend program at Mt. Sinai but also looked into some classes at maternal fitness that were less time consuming. ITA about the 4-6 week classes. Not only did I not feel that much time to be necessary, it would have been completely impossible with both my job and dh's. [ Reply | More ]

We did the same class, but we must have had a different instructor because it was painfully boring. It was a waste of time--we could have read any pregnancy book and learned the same info. [ Reply | More ]

I think her name was Tamara. We took other classes there that were terrific (Breastfeeding w/Ayelet, Newborn care w/Maureen), but the weekend childbirth prep class was a disappointment. [ Reply | More ]

we are delivering at NYU as well and took the intensive class which is 1 weekend, 9-4 both Sat and Sun. My DH got a lot out of it and it includes a tour of the hospital. [ Reply | More ]

I would take a hospital tour so you know where to go. FWIW, we didn't take a class and I can't see how it would have helped. I experienced pain like never before, phoned the OB who said it sounded like labor, DH flagged a cab, we went to the hospital, I got an epidural, the doctor called the shots and even if I didn't like it I was in no position to argue, we had a baby. DH was really helpful. [ Reply | More ]

You can actually have someone come to your house and give you the course in two sessions (in my case Cynthia Zinser - an RN and Doula - came to our house for 2, 2.5 hour sessions). Plus we watched a video she gave us. I'm sure you can find her contact info on the internet. We also did the hospital tour in addition to this. [ Reply | More ]
