[ - ] Public school mom here: Its not about bitter public school moms. The ones who are intolerable are the "we the people" entitled ones. The ones who want to take the DOE to task for everything, threatening lawsuits, rabble rousing. Cannot stand them. The rest are generally lovely. 3 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I think it's perfectly fine to be critical of the DOE. It is important to understand who the system is benefiting, and where the incentives lie. There is much that the DOE does well, but there are huge areas of dysfunctionality also, and there is nothing wrong with holding a public agency funded with our tax dollars accountable. [ - ] Has anyone else noticed that when pregnant, they get offered a seat on the bus but not the subway? When I take the bus, at least 1 person offers me a seat every time. When I take the subway, nothing. I haven't taken anyone up on the offer yet (only 6 months and not too many stops) but I find it interesting. 88 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

i noticed that when i was pregnant that it was mostly women who would give up their seats. and if it was a man it was usually a latino man, sometimes a black man, but hardly ever a white man. i traveled to london when i was pregnant and thought i would notice a difference there (would more men offer a seat?) as it turned out the same held true in london on the tube - it still was women who would give up their seats more often than a man. I was shocked to find that the bigger I got the less offers I got on the subway. I think it has to do more with the NYC attitude of having tunnel vision and not caring or noticing as you run over people. never noticed any consistency with the seat offers. it's always nice when one is offered so profuse gratitude is in order cuz you are neither elderly nor handicapped. personally, i preferred to stand on public transit during pregnancies, it was actually more comfortable especially towards the end. it was too difficult to get out of a seated position too! I'd give up my seat for you in both cases, but I'd probably be more aware of you on a bus. Also bus has a higher % of handicapped seats, so riders are supposed to be more aware of riders who needs seats and bus is more dangerous for you to be standing up in. [ Reply | More ]

I pretty much was always offered a seat. At the time, I rarely took the bus, so we're talking mostly subway. And I was definitely offered seats by a wide variety of people from all ethnic groups (I noticed, because I'd been told of people not offering). There's the sheer weight and unweildy-ness, the fact that if a pregnant woman falls there are more dangers for both her and her baby, and all the reasons having to do with blood supply and all the constant changes of pregnancy that a pregnant woman is more likely than average to feel sick or lightheaded. I've wondered why my experience was different than so many I've heard of, who were not offered seats much. I really don't know. All I know is that my attitude (which may have shown) was always (usually), yes, I need a seat, and no, I don't expect one to be offered. I was always gracious in accepting, and it was always a lovely shared moment. I'm reasonably attractive but not especially, white, was 39 yo at the time, tallish & thinnish. Today I travel w/ dd in an ergo, and am likewise almost always offered a seat, but not as quickly. Will anyone else fess up about how kind strangers were to you pregnant, or are we only complainers here? [ Reply | More ]

i never expected a seat, it was nice if someone offered. and i too was gracious when someone did, because they didn't have to. a lot of times when someone offered the seat, it was a few minutes after leaving the station, and they would apologize for not offering their seat right away because they didn't notice (we're reading, or zoning out). JUST SAY NO!!!! Whenever a bank custome goes in and grumbles about low interest rates, they send you over to their "investment" person who basically can't sell anything else except annuities. Annuities have their place as an investment product, but it's a very specific place, not for everyone and should be considered within the framework of an overall investment strategy - not all by itself. And it's certainly NOT an alternative to savings/CDs at the bank. If you are going to get an annuity, it should be from someone who also has the flexibility to offer you other investments and who is advising hte annuity based on your situation and NOT because he can't offer you anything else. you're welcome. annuities tend to tie up your money for a while and i see too many people get stuck in them because they were sold improperly. if you need to keep >$100K in the bank, then it can be in joint name (so FDIC insurance of $200K) or you need to put some of it in a different bank. Ea bank has FDIC insurance for up to $100K per depositor. If it's inconvenient to keep deposits at several different banks, consider an account at a financial services firm that will allow you to get CDs from several banks and hold them in one account. If you normally like your OB, I wouldn't change over this. Call back at another time and just make an appointment w your OB and then explain the situation to her. Gatekeepers can be a little OTT sometimes IMO (and my MD friends agree). I couldn't get an appointment to confirm pg w my GYN bc she doesn't do OB - but technically, it's not an OB appointment until you know you're pg. OTOH, I do think they don't really do anything for such an early miscarriage - many people don;t evne know they're pg at that point and would just think it's a late period. You should schedule an appointment to get checked out though and see if there are concerns as to cause of 2 mc. [ Reply | More ]

How old are you? I would definitely suggest going to an RE. The old common wisdom was you had 3 before there was a problem - but why wait? This is 2008 and there's no reason to suffer needlessly if there is something off with your hormones (eg progesterone). Also, You can have a doctor test the remains to determine if there is a chromosomal abnormality. Since this is your second, I would do that. That way they can assure you of an abnormality or if things seemed ok, then you know there may be a structural or hormonal issue with you that needs tending to with an RE. I am so sorry for your loss. I had a MC last Sept. and was devastated. Went to an RE straight away which was great, very reassuring, especially if time isn't on your side and you want to have more than 2 children. [ Reply | More ]

miscarriages are very common but if the way you were treated bothers you, you could look for a doctor with a better bedside matter. My ob is very matter of fact and she basically told me 'don't bother coming in' when I m/c'd twice around 6-7....she said 'just make appt for late next week for a sono and we'll make sure everything has been expelled'. I already had 2 dc's at the time (was trying for a 3rd, which I eventually got). Didn't bother me but I could see why it could seem very dismissive to someone else, especially if you were trying for #1. [ Reply | More ]

Go to an RE! It was the best decision I made. It can't hurt to make one appt. Try Dr. Nabil Husami. He's very old school and will customize his approach and pace...not like some clinics that (cornell, columbia pres) take same approach with everyone...(ie, clomid, then IUI, then IVF, whether it's all indicated or not) and you end up with multiples. He's into diagnostics, which I really appreciated. [ Reply | More ]

I had a m/c in Jan and my OB didn't send me to an RE - took almost 3 months of misdiagnoses before my RE Alan Copperman (RMA) figured out what was wrong in 5 mins. Wish I had gone earlier. I don't believe in the "wait for 3 m/c's before the total work up." I've had 2 m/c's and its more than enough for anyone - good luck. [ Reply | More ]

I have a snap and go stroller for my DD and planned on my first shopping trip as a short trip to the store where I would just put the food in the stroller basket or hold one of the store baskets in one hand. That way I wasn't encumbered by a large shopping cart. I wasn't too keen about putting the car seat on the top of the cart, just seems too top heavy and I have tried putting the car seat in the shopping cart basket but there's hardly any room for food, plus it can be a bumpy ride for baby. I was also afraid of an outburst, but if you do a quick shop (have a list ready) then it isn't so bad. DB will probably sleep the whole time. [ Reply | More ]

^^ Also, the first errand I did with my DD was to the baby store where there are tons of moms with babies and restrooms with nursing stations. I had a very cheap glider that I only used for the first 2 months. As DB got bigger, she started kicking the arm rests with her feet during BF and it drove me nuts. I would make sure the glider has wide arms or try sitting in it with a Boppy to see how the Boppy fits and whether DB will either kick the armrests or be able to lie their legs on top of the arm rests. I am a teacher who works in a school where the kids call me by my first time. While I agree it is dated to say Ms. Smith, I find it a little too causal when the kids are like 'hey Jane' - maybe at the younger age it is ok, but sometimes I walk the hallways of the older classrooms and to have a 12 yo saying to his teacher 'hey Mike, what's up' is just too causal to me. Granted I went to Catholic schools my whole life and to this day refer to most of my parents friends as Ms. Smith..... oh, and one other thing - parents who aren't comfortable with it at my school have their child call me Ms. Jane...... a bit odd, but I sort of like it.... and actually a few other kids started doing it as well.
