I called my ob gym at Cornell Weill after having a m/c at 5 1/2 weeks. The nurse called me back and said that there is really nothing they could do since it was so early in the pregnancy and not to bother coming in. I thought this was highly irregular and I told the nurse that this is my second m/c and that I thought I should see the doctor- she said that the I should schedule a pre-conception appt with the doctor. Should I change ob gyns? Are m/c's so prevalent that this is the way of things now? I felt they were very dismissive of my first m/c as well. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I'm sorry for your losses. I read 1 in 3 pg fail (mostly before you even know you are pg) so yes it is common however if you have had a m/c before I would want to discuss with a Dr. [ Reply | More ]

If you normally like your OB, I wouldn't change over this. Call back at another time and just make an appointment w your OB and then explain the situation to her. Gatekeepers can be a little OTT sometimes IMO (and my MD friends agree). I couldn't get an appointment to confirm pg w my GYN bc she doesn't do OB - but technically, it's not an OB appointment until you know you're pg. OTOH, I do think they don't really do anything for such an early miscarriage - many people don;t evne know they're pg at that point and would just think it's a late period. You should schedule an appointment to get checked out though and see if there are concerns as to cause of 2 mc. [ Reply | More ]

Thank u. Is it worth going to an RE at this point? Or just see my ob gyn for now? [ Reply | More ]

I would see your OB first. As upsetting as it is, I don;t think that 2 early miscarriages means you need an RE, but OB will know far better than me. [ Reply | More ]

How old are you? I would definitely suggest going to an RE. The old common wisdom was you had 3 before there was a problem - but why wait? This is 2008 and there's no reason to suffer needlessly if there is something off with your hormones (eg progesterone). Also, You can have a doctor test the remains to determine if there is a chromosomal abnormality. Since this is your second, I would do that. That way they can assure you of an abnormality or if things seemed ok, then you know there may be a structural or hormonal issue with you that needs tending to with an RE. I am so sorry for your loss. I had a MC last Sept. and was devastated. Went to an RE straight away which was great, very reassuring, especially if time isn't on your side and you want to have more than 2 children. [ Reply | More ]

miscarriages are very common but if the way you were treated bothers you, you could look for a doctor with a better bedside matter. My ob is very matter of fact and she basically told me 'don't bother coming in' when I m/c'd twice around 6-7....she said 'just make appt for late next week for a sono and we'll make sure everything has been expelled'. I already had 2 dc's at the time (was trying for a 3rd, which I eventually got). Didn't bother me but I could see why it could seem very dismissive to someone else, especially if you were trying for #1. [ Reply | More ]

Thank you all for your responses! I'm 33 and had 1st m/c at 11 weeks. Not sure if I can take another m/c... I don't know if I should wait to go to a RE but I'm also OCD and I feel like my body is betraying me. An referrels would be much appreciated! [ Reply | More ]

Go to an RE! It was the best decision I made. It can't hurt to make one appt. Try Dr. Nabil Husami. He's very old school and will customize his approach and pace...not like some clinics that (cornell, columbia pres) take same approach with everyone...(ie, clomid, then IUI, then IVF, whether it's all indicated or not) and you end up with multiples. He's into diagnostics, which I really appreciated. [ Reply | More ]

I had a m/c in Jan and my OB didn't send me to an RE - took almost 3 months of misdiagnoses before my RE Alan Copperman (RMA) figured out what was wrong in 5 mins. Wish I had gone earlier. I don't believe in the "wait for 3 m/c's before the total work up." I've had 2 m/c's and its more than enough for anyone - good luck. [ Reply | More ]
