I'm SAHM and the Mom's my kids have playdates with are my friends. The playdates are as much for me as my dc. I have no interest in spending my social time with people who I am not friendly with. There is a big difference between a SAHM and a nanny who is 'working' during a playdate. [ Reply | More ]

I wasn't calling teachers underachievers. i was saying that FA often amounts to hiring MC familes who are well educated, often in good privates themselves, but who are now underachievers, but still want expensive private schools for their dcs, for the wealthy kids to have a diverse experience. np; I don't know every single FA family, but I can tell you that the ones I know didn't go to private schools (though many did go to good colleges) and are not underachievers. WEll, not on purpose anyway. Just bec you graduated from a good college doesn't mean you can be a hedgefund manager or investment banker. Most grads end up having regular jobs and they're not considered underachievers. [ Reply | More ]

its just part of the whole private school system. the work you do for the preschool is just the warm up game for the big leagues at ongoing. the whole thing is a big scam. first you pay through the nose, then you are told the school can't even educate your dc for $30K per year, so fundraising is necessary. then they use a ton of money to pay for people who have decided to SAH to raise their dcs and cannot afford the $30K. its a racket! Surprisingly almost none. They tried to sell some bags with the school's name on it. It was a very slow year last year. I've gone thru this myself. Your child's best friends are with nannys all day. You need a nanny just so your DC can have playdates with his friends that have nannys. Been there. I tried to make other freinds for DC - it can take time but eventually your DC will have friends without nannys. Or just get a babysitter for 10 hrs a week and book the playdates then. That's what I did. [ Reply | More ]

oh...also - get to know your DC's friends nannies. Call them directly. Invite them over. Make friends with them and say you want playdates. Most WOHM don't want the hassle of the scheduling, they leave it to the nannies. Or just say to the mom - ' do you mind if i call your nanny for a playdate '. Have done this myself many times - if you want the playdate with the child they're watching it's what you have to do. [ Reply | More ]

Really? I think the nanny doesn't want to do the playdates. The mom works crazy hours and we get together for dinner and sometimes playdates, but not very often since she isn't home that much. [ Reply | More ]

In my very monied community no one needs a nanny to have a play date - but it makes a good excuse if I don't want to hang out with a particular mom I guess. [ Reply | More ]

I think you should just find other SAHM or have playdates with the nannies. I haven't been in your situation, but I am WOHM and my dd doesn't get to go on playdates with kids who have SAHM. Only a few of the moms will do playdates with my nanny. [ Reply | More ]

please don't get a nanny for this reason. your dc may be disappointed for a little while, but are these really the people you want to be friendly with? and the kids you want your daughter to be friends with? [ Reply | More ]

Why don't you just make arrangements to drop your kid off with the nanny for a playdate. As long as you don't seem like you are taking advantage of the nanny, this seems like reasonable compromise. You don't have to hang out with the nanny so your kid can have someone to play with. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] ok ladies - need advice. just moved to burbs and dd (3.6) wants a present every time we go to a big store (supermarket, target, etc). I swear she's not a brat, but when we lived in the city, such trips were rare (every few months or so). so i always got her a small present. so i kind of conditioned her for it. now we live here and go a few times a week. now what? 17 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

oh stop. i do say no, it's just she has a learned behavior and now i have to have her unlearn it. i have 2 dc, and it's hard to manage a tantrum in the middle of a store. if i were "spineless" i'd just buy her one each time. [ Reply | More ]

I live less than a mile from target and I am there all the time. I put up with the whining, but I stand pretty firm. Unless I discuss getting a toy in advance of going, we do not get anything. There is a lot of whining somedays, but I am firm. Its not fun, but it is what it is. I felt like I was buying crap from the "one spot" twice a week. I do not want to raise my kids like that. np: same here. This has never been a problem w/ either kid. Sometimes we get something--but more often we don't. I remember being in a toy store once w/ a mom & grandma & a 3 y.o. boy. They were buying him not just one Broder truck but 3 of them (for his birthday, presumably) but first took all of them out of the package for him to try. Then he had a freak out at the counter because he also wanted a huge bag of jelly beans. Oy--a little Veruka Salt. [ Reply | More ]

see if you can ask if you can be placed next to an empty seat - you may be lucky and no one will end up sitting next to you. an other thing to do is get to the airport early and go to the airline's lounge (you don't have to be a silver/gold member) most airlines allow you to pay a fee for the day (delta's is $25) and then you get to sit in the lounge - have some snacks, etc before you board. also i was thinking that in the lounge there are ticket agents - you may have more luck with them getting you to be placed next to an empty seat or even possibly bumped up.
