Since we're all so into names atm, here is my dilemma: Need a name that works in French and English for ds (and doesn't sound either masculine or feminine depending on the pronunciation). our choices are: Luc, Olivier, Samuel and Nicolas. Any input (or other suggestions) very much appreciated! [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Simon sounds like Simone when pronounce in French, which is problematic. [ Reply | More ]

For some reason I really don't like Philippe - not sure why (makes me think of a chubby butler or something, definitely an old person) [ Reply | More ]

Why n ot??? Tons of people in US have unusual names. It's nice to not have a name like everyone else. As soon as he (or you) says it once, it is a non-issue. [ Reply | More ]

I agree that its nice to have an unusual name (and want one for dcs) but it is another to have one that is hard to pronounce and confusing to spell. I grew up with one [ Reply | More ]

I like Emile but it will be confused with Emily/Emilee, etc, which is so common. [ Reply | More ]

so not an issue. if he's a boy nobody will think his name is emily. emile is a legitimate boy name. Like Julian or Jules for a boy...people don't think that is Julie or Julia, [ Reply | More ]

np - actually it can be an issue - lots of class lists, etc might confuse him for a girl. My brother's name and he gets lots of things addressed to Ms. Emile X [ Reply | More ]

no offense, but you are picky! Not that you shouldn't be when naming your kid, but your reasons are odd. [ Reply | More ]

that emile will be confused with emily, remy in ratatouille (it's not like you are naming your kid Cinderella...I've seen Rat. and it didn't occur to me) [ Reply | More ]

Of those names, I think Nicolas is definitely the best in English. Samuel will get shortened to Sam and Luc and Olivier are really not English names. You will be dooming your son to misspellings / mispronunciation his whole life (unless in France.) [ Reply | More ]
