Ped PT here- the ped won't be too concerned at this point in time if there is nothing else going on. also- child will not qualify for EI(requires a 25% delay). I'd call ped, wait and watch. Also- put db on floor, scatter toys around and let play. Avoid exersaucer, carseat, swing, etc. [ Reply | More ]

They aren't just looking at few isolated skills. Rather they look at a variety of present and emerging skills. There is a wide range of what is typical for motor development. If the child is doing well in other areas and thriving there is less of a cause for concern. If the child is having feeding issues, medical issues, growth issues the ped is usually more concerned. Agree, if you are concerned, call EI now: right over the phone they should be able to tell you whether an eval is warranted. If it's not, you'll get peace of mind; if it is, better info and possibly early help. And all of it is free. [ Reply | More ]

being boy or girl, 1st, 2nd or 3rd does not determine normal milestones for normal speech development! My 3rd child, a boy, has been getting speech therapy since 20 mos, and glad he has been. He has global delays now (at 2.11) but the early help has helped. He will go to special needs preschool and get even more intensive help in many areas. It's not smart to "not" seek an eval just b/c a child is a boy, or not a first child, in my opinion. [ Reply | More ]

It may be your MO, but those of us who have kids with delays have learned to take these things very seriously. You gain much and lose nothing by investigating, and the potential downside of NOT evaluating is great. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Anyone else completely sick and tired of dh's hobby? Mine is an amateur musician and I'm going out of my mind hearing him practice the same few bars of the same piece over and over and over and over and over... 12 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

yah but he's very obsessive and it's isolating and irritating--I kind of wish he just played video games like some normal guy [ Reply | More ]

now that would be isolating and irritating! Eventually he will get better and maybe it will be fun. What does he play? [ Reply | More ]

I fantasize about joining in sometimes, but I'm too lazy to practice the way he does. We're just really different personalities I think. He does one thing repetitively until he gets it right and I do a lot of things in more of a half-assed, but getting-to-completion kind of way. [ Reply | More ]

I'm more like you. That's the beauty of a kazoo though. You just have to be able to carry a tune [ Reply | More ]
