Can someone tell me how much a 23mo should be talking? I'm a little concerned about my ds. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

yes, he understands nearly everything. I'm just concerned that he doesn't verbalize much. mostly one word statements, and mostly only if prompted. [ Reply | More ]

thats great that he understands. Have you thought of calling Ei and getting an eval? It will stop your concerns if his evals are normal. [ Reply | More ]

Agree, if you are concerned, call EI now: right over the phone they should be able to tell you whether an eval is warranted. If it's not, you'll get peace of mind; if it is, better info and possibly early help. And all of it is free. [ Reply | More ]

It all depends. First, 2nd, 3rd baby. Boy or Girl. My 2.5 yo. understands everything, and talks constantly, I just don't get most of it, still, I'm not too worried. [ Reply | More ]

op: i guess that could be true with my ds as well. he says do-do-do-do all the time, and sometimes I distinctly hear him say "do it again" or "what's that" amid the do-do-do-ing. [ Reply | More ]

being boy or girl, 1st, 2nd or 3rd does not determine normal milestones for normal speech development! My 3rd child, a boy, has been getting speech therapy since 20 mos, and glad he has been. He has global delays now (at 2.11) but the early help has helped. He will go to special needs preschool and get even more intensive help in many areas. It's not smart to "not" seek an eval just b/c a child is a boy, or not a first child, in my opinion. [ Reply | More ]

ITA. Birth order and gender is not important if your kid isn't hitting milestones. [ Reply | More ]

and this http://www.speechdelay.com/testrosemilestones2.htm#2%20years. As you can see 2-word combos emerge at 18 mo as a milestone. [ Reply | More ]

This is insane IMO. By 18 mos, children should have some words, but 2-word combinations are more typically developing by 2 yrs old, not 18 mos. [ Reply | More ]

It may be your MO, but those of us who have kids with delays have learned to take these things very seriously. You gain much and lose nothing by investigating, and the potential downside of NOT evaluating is great. [ Reply | More ]

OR: I HAVE a child with delays, and I was NEVER told that 2 word combinations are expected by 18 mos...2 years is what I was told by our developmental pediatrician, who is one of the best in NYC. [ Reply | More ]

call and have the state do an EI eval. it can't hurt, and it will put your mind to rest. they will not make you feel like a crazy mom. [ Reply | More ]

I could not agree more. If you are in NYC, we can give you names of good agencies to call (rather than calling the statewide 800 number, which might get you a lousy agency, and sadly there are a bunch of those). [ Reply | More ]
