I'm almost twelve weeks, with #2, and this has been a huge problem for me (was not, with first pregnancy). I'm already really sticking out, so all my pants are uncomfortable, and my stomach is visible in anything clingy. Making it worse: I'm the ed in chief of a magazine, so manage a whole staff, and really don't want anyone to know. Plus, have to look great every day. Basically I've been wearing Empire waist dresses--very much in style, thankfully--or loose shifts, with great shoes (not super-high heels, but wedges or 2-inch slingbacks, Corso Como or such), and little cardigans. Bought a great sleeveless cotton one at The Gap (plain black, can be dressed up or dressed down), and have a couple of knit ones from Forever 21 (didn't want to spend a ton of money, b/c knew I'd soon be in maternity), and another from Zachary's Smile, on Lafayette. I've been wearing the same things over and over, but figure, who cares... [ Reply | More ]

op:thanks and congrats! I'm a 32D normally and can't always wear empire waisted dresses/tops. Do have a few though. tRouble is that my boobs are now really 'full' and uncomfortable and I seem to be having a problem with water retention! Drinking loads of water, avoiding salty foods etc. Still, mirror tells me I look more pregnant than I want to look, and clothes are way too snug. Thank you though. I think you must look fab! or: I completely understand. I'm normally a 32C (which sounds big, but I'm actually kind of small) and am now up to a 32D, but for me the problem is really more the stomach. It's so bad that two weeks ago--despite the empire waist--a mom at my son's school said to another mom, "Oh, I didn't realize she was pregnant!" (And I was only 9.5 weeks.) I'm kind of a small person, so that might be why, but still! One thing I'd say is, it's actually gotten a little better (the bloating) in the last week or so. So you may feel better soon. It was winter for me too so I wore a lot of big sweaters. I'm a 32DD normally so I totally understand the empire waist thing. I "came out" at work a lot earlier than I had planned b/c by 14 weeks I just felt HUGE and was already wearing maternity pants. I would try to buy some of the underbelly maternity pants and wear longer shirts to cover your belly. Unfortunately, not much you can do about the big boobs and puffy face. GL! [ Reply | More ]

op:thanks! re. the underbelly pants, when did you start wearing them? My jeans feel tight but don't know if it's only for now or if I'm going to need maternity pants soon. Wish I could wear sweaters or keep a jacket on but it's getting warmer already. Tia [ Reply | More ]

I started wearing the underbelly pants at about 12 weeks. Pea in the pod had some nice lightweight wool ones that looked identical to the ones I wear normally. I am still wearing them but starting to outgrow them a bit (now 24 weeks). I bought my jeans at 13 weeks b/c I knew I'd need a week to get them hemmed the way I like. I bought them at Bellydance and bought a size too big based on the input of the sales woman. I really regretted it at first, but now I am SO relieved. They fit great and are still comfortable. I also bought some of those belly bands around 12 weeks but only used them for a week or two. They were helpful but I was more comfortable in the maternity pants than trying to fake my own. op:thanks, you're being very helpful and I appreciate it. Re. the belly bands, do you think I could get away with one now? Wear jeans a lot (sahm) and the currently snug fit I'm experiencing is giving me a muffintop. Will try and go shopping next week to try on empire waist tops (cringing!) and hopefully I'll find something that suits me. I know I they're out there (empire waist tops/dresses for big boobed women) but haven't had much luck, since the trend started, to find them on my infrequent shopping trips. Bella bands (just googled them) sound intriguing (didn't use them last time) but not sure how effective or how visible they'll be? Tia [ Reply | More ]

The belly band are perfect for that. I would wear my pants unbuttoned and use a ponytail holder just to hold the button in place. Then I'd put the belly band over so I didn't look completely ridiculous. I just wore tops that were long enough to cover everything or that would look like I had a tank top on if you happen to see the belly band [ Reply | More ]

Not judging you, just offering an alternative view. I think you have to make the rules since you're the primary caregiver. Yes. She uses it for dinner and for lunch. And now I spent all of lunch having the most boring conversation with my kids about "dessert" instead of about the fun stuff we usually talk about. [ Reply | More ]

No problem. Like I said below, I obviously wasn't expressing myself clearly due to being frazzled. [ Reply | More ]

I totally agree with your concerns. You are going to have to step in on two fronts - - first with the children and then with her. She won't understand your issues tho because what she is doing has been done for generations. It is a relatively old school mind set. So, before you approach her, put yourself in her shoes ("my mother did this to me, her mother did it before that, etc.") and approach it from an perspective that doesn't undermine her history (i.e., implying that there is something wrong with her and worse.. her mother) so that she doesn't get defensive. Sorry I missed this point btw. It must have been really frustrating to talk to me. [ Reply | More ]

I don't know if you are even still around, but, no, it wasn't so bad talking to you ;) I really do believe in different people giving different things and that includes here on UB, but I am glad you see where I am coming from and I appreciate your advice on not attacking her history. Exactly. Thank you. I am obviously frazzled by the dumb conversation at lunchtime. [ Reply | More ]
