No, that is one person with an ax to grind. We had a ds in public K and are thrilled! He learned to read by November and we did nothing to teach him. All his teacher. He can do double digit addition and subtraction in his head. What is your zoned school? [ Reply | More ]

It seems like her problem stemmed from a combination of her child's particular needs and a teacher with wrong ideas ("cover up the word and look at the picture" is just wrong). My child, like her younger son, required very explicit phonics. Many kids do not, and will learn to read just fine with the methods used in school. Luckily my child was in a school that helped her get break through with decoding. [ Reply | More ]

^^^ Most private schools use Explode the Code workbooks for reading. I do think many children in NYC public schools, especially those from lower income backgrounds, would benefit from more explicit phonics teaching. [ Reply | More ]

My dd is in public zoned k which uses balanced literacy. She's ending the year reading chapter books. We did go on Starfalls once in a while, but other than that I don't know how the reading happened. I also read that blog and I see there are a few kids in my dd's class who are really not learning to read at all. Some kids need explcit phonics and the schools should provide it for those who do. It really is meaningless. The most important thing is that your child loves reading and becomes an avid book reader as an adult. At what point they start from birth to second grade matters not. [ Reply | More ]

The benefits of early reading is that it builds confidence so that your child is comfortable and confident and school, it also ignites imagination, teaches vocabulary among other benefits. If you have a child who is eager to learn, why not support them in their desire? If you're looking for an amazing program and a great tutoring service, check out READING IN PRESCHOOL [ Reply | More ]

there is nothing bad you can say about Hillary that you can't also say about Barack - and the race-smears and sexism make him even worse. He's not only done the GOP's work against Hillary for them, he's also done the GOP's work against racial equality for them. They have been trying for years to convince black Americans that Democrats are just as racist as they are, and now Obama has based his campaign on convincing them that they're right! [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] probably the worst offender is the NBC/MSNBC network, which has what one prominent Clinton activist describes as "its nightly horror shows". Tim Russert, the network's chief political sage, was dancing on Clinton's political grave before the votes in North Carolina and Indiana had even been fully counted - let alone those of the six contests to come, the undeclared super-delegates, or the disputed states of Florida and Michigan. The unashamed sexism of this giant network alone is stupendous. Its superstar commentator Chris Matthews referred to Clinton as a "she-devil". His colleague Tucker Carlson casually observed that Clinton "feels castrating, overbearing and scary . . . When she comes on television, I involuntarily cross my legs." This and similar abuse, I need hardly point out, says far more about the men involved than their target. 4 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

But never before have the US media taken it upon themselves to proclaim the victor before the primary contests are over or the choice of all the super-delegates is known, and the result was that the media's tidal wave of sexism became self-fulfilling: Americans like to back winners, and polls immediately showed dramatic surges of support for Obama. A few brave souls had foreseen the merciless media campaign: "The press will savage her no matter what," predicted the Washington Post's national political correspondent, Dana Milbank, last December. "They really have their knives out for her, there's no question about it." [ Reply | More ]

Hillary Clinton (along with her husband) is being universally depicted as a loathsome racist and negative campaigner, not so much because of anything she has said or done, but because the overwhelmingly pro-Obama media - consciously or unconsciously - are following the agenda of Senator Barack Obama and his chief strategist, David Axelrod, to tear to pieces the first serious female US presidential candidate in history. "What's particularly saddening," says Paul Krugman, professor of economics and international affairs at Princeton and a rare dissenting voice from the left as a columnist in the New York Times, "is the way many Obama supporters seem happy with the . . . way pundits and some news organisations treat any action or statement by the Clintons, no matter how innocuous, as proof of evil intent." Despite widespread reporting to the contrary, Krugman believes that most of the "venom" in the campaign "is coming from supporters of Obama". [ Reply | More ]

FWIW Paul Krugman has been vocal about his anti-Obama sentiments for months. So I would take what he writes with a grain of salt. Same with whatever Chris Matthews and Tim Russert spews on MSNBC. [ Reply | More ]
