No, she's more than a little nutty, and her son's experience at Lower Lab is not typical at all. [ Reply | More ]

No, that is one person with an ax to grind. We had a ds in public K and are thrilled! He learned to read by November and we did nothing to teach him. All his teacher. He can do double digit addition and subtraction in his head. What is your zoned school? [ Reply | More ]

It seems like her problem stemmed from a combination of her child's particular needs and a teacher with wrong ideas ("cover up the word and look at the picture" is just wrong). My child, like her younger son, required very explicit phonics. Many kids do not, and will learn to read just fine with the methods used in school. Luckily my child was in a school that helped her get break through with decoding. [ Reply | More ]

^^^ Most private schools use Explode the Code workbooks for reading. I do think many children in NYC public schools, especially those from lower income backgrounds, would benefit from more explicit phonics teaching. [ Reply | More ]

My dd is in public zoned k which uses balanced literacy. She's ending the year reading chapter books. We did go on Starfalls once in a while, but other than that I don't know how the reading happened. I also read that blog and I see there are a few kids in my dd's class who are really not learning to read at all. Some kids need explcit phonics and the schools should provide it for those who do. How long does it take for your dd to get through a chapter book? Does she read the whole thing or only a few pages at a time? [ Reply | More ]
