[ - ] I live in a rough neighborhood where the public school is full of kids from the projects, but I'm surrounded by the great public schools of Brownstone Brooklyn. Obviously bullying is going to be a huge problem if my kid is the only white student in the local school. That's just life. Does my kid have to be a genius and test into some special school to avoid that, or will education officials sometimes take pity on the kid and grant some kind of variance? 36 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

np I'm in the same boat in Atlanta. Our public schools in my nabe are just not an option. So - we are going to buckle down and pay for catholic school. If we just can't do it, I'll consider homeschooling for a couple of years. Just can't send her to the publics where we are now and can't afford to move [ Reply | More ]

where do you live? Boerum Hill, Red Hook or Fort Greene? DOE doesn't give variance anymore especially to PS 29 or PS58 and forget about BNS or Children's school. Check out decent schools that are under capacity in the South Slope/Sunset Park area such as PS 10, PS 154, PS 1 and PS 295. Are there enough families in the same boat as you that could help turn around the local PS? [ Reply | More ]

Red Hook. The local school is apparently very well run but problem is, nobody wants to be the first to subject their kids to such a rough crowd. I have a lot of experience dealing with people who live in the projects and I wouldn't do it even if there were a few others with me. [ Reply | More ]

I think the days of faking an address to score a slot at PS 58 or PS 29 are over. You can't keep a low-profile in Red Hook anymore -too many young families in the same position. Why not try the local PS for pre-k at least? [ Reply | More ]

np from above: what OP describes is not faking. BUT OP doing that risks losing your apt. If you can afford to move elsewhere, why not do it? (In the interest of full disclosure, I am not a big fan of Red Hook. Well, except LeNells.) [ Reply | More ]

My child is the only white kid in his school (pre-K). I wouldn't say he has been bullied, but the school is terrible academically. NP: if you are still watching this post, i'm pretty sure that oltl is filmed at 56 W. 66th St. (bet. CPW & Columbus). The only reason i know this is because i'm a fan of the show too :) i live in nj, and many a time i have driven by the studios but i don't really have the guts to stand outside there and try to catch a glimpse of the actors. i do know that lots of fans do, and there are photos of them with their favorite actors on the web.
