[ - ] Trying to help BIL and SIL: their dd is 6 and doing very poorly in school. She has had developmental issues all along [didn't speak until age 2 1/2, perseverated on toys, didn't turn to her name, etc.] but received no intervention. To complicate matters, they now live in Luxembourg so their dd has to learn several different languages. So I guess I'm asking if anyone knows what services are like in Europe, specifically Luxembourg if you know. Also, should they get her evaluated there or here when they come back to the States next summer? Finally, what kind of eval? I was thinking neuropsych, but maybe a developmental ped? TIA. 44 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Luxembourg is more advanced at this stuff than the US. There is also a European school there, where the kid (well, the parents) gets to choose which language they are taught in. It's a very rich and advanced country, so there really is no reason to not get her to see a doc asap. I'd say developmental ped. [ Reply | More ]

OP: I stepped away from the computer to bring ds to school. I was not involved in any of the above exchange. I was thinking that BIL and SIL should have their dd evaluated here or in the UK just b/c English is the dd's first language so the evaluator could get a clear picture of her language development. Also, BIL and SIL are not fluent in any language other than English, so it would be easier for them to communicate with the evaluator too. However, I don't know if the Luxembourg system would accept an international evaluation, so it might be a waste of money. Our niece has trouble attending and seems to have trouble with auditory processing. She picked up Luxembourgish in daycare and speaks it well enough to function w/ her peers [she's very social]. The problem is that now she has to learn German in a more traditional classroom setting and doesn't seem to be getting it at all. She is falling further and further behind. Thanks for any help you can provide. [ Reply | More ]

A lot of it depends on what country you come from. In the European school I know they have set up a SN program, but I'm not sure about the international school. The ES is meant for EU officials' offspring, non-EU can attend as well but they have to pay for it. Outside of the school systems, I suppose it's just a question of finding a dr you like. There are websites for expats where you can get fairly good tips. [ Reply | More ]
