Trying to help BIL and SIL: their dd is 6 and doing very poorly in school. She has had developmental issues all along [didn't speak until age 2 1/2, perseverated on toys, didn't turn to her name, etc.] but received no intervention. To complicate matters, they now live in Luxembourg so their dd has to learn several different languages. So I guess I'm asking if anyone knows what services are like in Europe, specifically Luxembourg if you know. Also, should they get her evaluated there or here when they come back to the States next summer? Finally, what kind of eval? I was thinking neuropsych, but maybe a developmental ped? TIA. Luxembourg is more advanced at this stuff than the US. There is also a European school there, where the kid (well, the parents) gets to choose which language they are taught in. It's a very rich and advanced country, so there really is no reason to not get her to see a doc asap. I'd say developmental ped. [ Reply | More ]

I'm surprised to hear this. My knowledge of people raising SN kids in Europe is that services are woefully poor and recognition of disorders is way lower than in the US. I think they should have their dd evaluated here for SURE. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, I do actually feel superior to someone who thinks Europe is a country and believes everything they see on the daytime teevee is the word of god. People were actually trying to help, but you didn't actually want to ask anything, you just wanted to judge. She replied perfectly nicely and you insulted an entire continent in response [ Reply | More ]

cat walked on to keyboard. So are you suggesting that her comment is informed and she has this knowledge concerning each and every european country? There are about 50 countries in Europe, and some of them are places like Sweden and Luxembourg, and some of them are places like Bulgaria or Ukraine. Come on. You cannot possibly compare the services or knowhow of Luxembourg to many of the other countries. Look it up on Wiki if you don't know what Lux is. [ Reply | More ]

I just think it's completely preposterous that someone wouldn't seek treatment for their child in one of the richest countries of the world just because they have been brought up to believe that everything is better in the US. That is just not always true, and all I am saying is that if you're just going to go ahead and insult the rest of the world then why are you asking the question to begin with. Don't ask if you don't want the answer. [ Reply | More ]

OP - you weren't speaking to me. BIL and SIL did not seek treatment for dd b/c they were in deep denial, not b/c they think the US is better. They have been very happy w/ general health care over there, but seem to be at sea when it comes to developmental/educational supports. I was just asking if anyone has specific information about the Luxembourg system, and whether she should see a neuropsych or a developmental ped. [ Reply | More ]

NP - the dc described above obviously has something wrong. Just becuase we in the US diagnose every different personality as being somehow SN, doesn't mean that an actual developmental disorder could somehow go unnoticed in any western country. You are not making much sense. THink about it. Europeans are much much healthier than Americans - how do you explain that if their medical knowledge were what you are saying. [ Reply | More ]

Umm... Ever heard of private? At least those guys HAVE services, which you are entirely free not to use, and go private. With an issue like that I would never go to public services anyway, not in any country [ Reply | More ]

what? I was just stating a fact. In the US health services are incredibly expensive. At least in some European countries your public health services cover part of the cost of private. You're not understanding what I'm saying. [ Reply | More ]

You obviously do not have any experience in this area. Insurance covers this sort of thing. Check out the Kennedy Center in the Bx. Insurance covers tutoring for kids that are delayed or have learning disabilities. [ Reply | More ]

OP: I stepped away from the computer to bring ds to school. I was not involved in any of the above exchange. I was thinking that BIL and SIL should have their dd evaluated here or in the UK just b/c English is the dd's first language so the evaluator could get a clear picture of her language development. Also, BIL and SIL are not fluent in any language other than English, so it would be easier for them to communicate with the evaluator too. However, I don't know if the Luxembourg system would accept an international evaluation, so it might be a waste of money. Our niece has trouble attending and seems to have trouble with auditory processing. She picked up Luxembourgish in daycare and speaks it well enough to function w/ her peers [she's very social]. The problem is that now she has to learn German in a more traditional classroom setting and doesn't seem to be getting it at all. She is falling further and further behind. Thanks for any help you can provide. [ Reply | More ]

Oh, ok. So it was just some xenophobe sabotaging your thread. Anyway, there are actually a lot of medical experts in the Benelux area who are native English speakers. There's a massive population of expats [ Reply | More ]

A lot of it depends on what country you come from. In the European school I know they have set up a SN program, but I'm not sure about the international school. The ES is meant for EU officials' offspring, non-EU can attend as well but they have to pay for it. Outside of the school systems, I suppose it's just a question of finding a dr you like. There are websites for expats where you can get fairly good tips. [ Reply | More ]

OP: our niece is attending the regular Luxembourg school, not the International School or the European school. Maybe BIL can get her into the ES. You don't happen to know the names of any of those websites off hand, do you? [ Reply | More ]
