[ - ] Confession: I am SO not interested in breastfeeding. Adopted baby #1, pregnant with #2. Will give it a shot in the hospital, but I am really not at all interested in breastfeeding and when my friends EBF babies are hanging off them all the time I am not jealous at their ability to breastfeed. Anyone else like this? Perhaps it is because I could not breastfeed #1? I feel freakish (but honest). 24 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Hmm. It's a bummer you don't have women close to you for whom it's worked out well. Maybe seek out some moms you know who enjoyed bfing? I had trouble the 1st 10 days, but after that it was smooth sailing; I liked bfing because it was a nice time to cuddle with dd and it was surprisingly cool to know that I could make her nourishment from my own body (I'm not super crunchy, so this last part was an interesting and nice surprise). Maybe you can look at it a little this way. You know how before you have kids people tell you, "your life will never be the same", "you'll love them more than you ever dreamed possible", etc etc and you kind of thought to yourself - "okay, right". And then you had kids and really understood what they meant. I think breastfeeding can be kind of similar. It does hurt (a lot) at first, but if you can get it going, it can become a really hard thing to give up because it's a connection with your baby that's incredibly close - obviously physically - but also emotionally. I hated it at first, but loved it later. But if you do it without really wanting to try, it definitely won't work because it's not easy for most at first. So don't feel guilty, just don't do it. ok, you couldn't for your first & maybe you compensated by convincing yourself it was a huge relief. Now is a new situation & just start w/a fresh attitude. Yes it hurts for the first two weeks & yes you are pretty confined to being with your baby every two hours but one the other hand you may enjoy the whole bonding/loving interaction, the physical warmth & intimacy & most importantly - the excuse to sit down in a comfy chair & rest for twenty minutes because absolutely no-one else can to this feeding but you! I would've felt guilty, too--but baby is probably just fine. If only for your own peace of mind, perhaps figure out a way to drink less when you're in such a situation. . . I had wine at dinner in a fancy oversized shot glass, and only had 1 glass for a whole meal (had wine about 3-4 nights/week in last tri). So I got the taste and the ritual I liked, but relatively little alcohol. [ Reply | More ]

So why not take advantage of your not having to be a soccer mom? If you want to sign up for that by all means do, but it is not at all a necessity! [ Reply | More ]

One would think, but honestly, nearly every athletically interested child in dc's class is signed up already. I was wondering if I was somehow hopelessly out of the loop. [ Reply | More ]

Again, it is your choice. Plenty of boys in NYC don't start till later if at all. Mine started a sports afterschool program in 2nd grade where he is picked up & dropped off & it is enough. He learns to play & have fun w/his friends but it is not super competitive & doesn't take up any family time on the weekend. [ Reply | More ]

Most kids do it though, WSSL or little league for t-ball are all rage in NYC too. My kids love it, anyway. [ Reply | More ]

I disagree. If you plan on doing it eventually, it's much better to start when everyone else does too. If you wait by the time your dc joins the kids that are playing will be very good already and s/he will have very hard time. [ Reply | More ]

I am anti team sports for six year olds to be honest. And no, your child will not be out of the loop. I think this is addressed in The Hurried Child? Skill wise, if you wait, they catch up really quick. Too many sports related injuries in young children today because they push too hard too early. [ Reply | More ]

I'll be completely honest with you: I signed dd up for soccer at the age of 6 and she was ALREADY behind at that point. All the kids on her team either had played on teams before or had at least played with older siblings and attended their games. However, if dd had any natural ability or desire, I think she could have caught up quickly. But as soon as she realized she didn't know the terms and was the worst on the team, she simply shut down and soccer was a big mess. However, she started gymnastics for the first time at the age of 7 and had plenty of other beginners in her class and did just fine. So, I think it depends on your child and the group he gets in. I hvae a Bug Chameleon and it is really big. The Frog is smaller but I think similarly cumbersome. That said, it is a smooooth ride and has held up beautifully for years. We really love it. [ Reply | More ]
