Will my almost 6 yo dc be hopelessly out of the loop if he doesn't begin doing organized sports already? I mean like a league baseball or soccer thing? He enjoys those sports, but we were thinking of waiting another year or so before joining them. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

This is the exact reason I live in NYC - so I don't have to schlep ds to soccer/hockey/baseball practice @ 7 am on a Sat. [ Reply | More ]

So why not take advantage of your not having to be a soccer mom? If you want to sign up for that by all means do, but it is not at all a necessity! [ Reply | More ]

One would think, but honestly, nearly every athletically interested child in dc's class is signed up already. I was wondering if I was somehow hopelessly out of the loop. [ Reply | More ]

Again, it is your choice. Plenty of boys in NYC don't start till later if at all. Mine started a sports afterschool program in 2nd grade where he is picked up & dropped off & it is enough. He learns to play & have fun w/his friends but it is not super competitive & doesn't take up any family time on the weekend. [ Reply | More ]

Most kids do it though, WSSL or little league for t-ball are all rage in NYC too. My kids love it, anyway. [ Reply | More ]

I disagree. If you plan on doing it eventually, it's much better to start when everyone else does too. If you wait by the time your dc joins the kids that are playing will be very good already and s/he will have very hard time. [ Reply | More ]

I am anti team sports for six year olds to be honest. And no, your child will not be out of the loop. I think this is addressed in The Hurried Child? Skill wise, if you wait, they catch up really quick. Too many sports related injuries in young children today because they push too hard too early. [ Reply | More ]

I'll be completely honest with you: I signed dd up for soccer at the age of 6 and she was ALREADY behind at that point. All the kids on her team either had played on teams before or had at least played with older siblings and attended their games. However, if dd had any natural ability or desire, I think she could have caught up quickly. But as soon as she realized she didn't know the terms and was the worst on the team, she simply shut down and soccer was a big mess. However, she started gymnastics for the first time at the age of 7 and had plenty of other beginners in her class and did just fine. So, I think it depends on your child and the group he gets in.
