[ - ] can anyone help. had my first psychologist appointment this morning for my DS - 18 mo. severe ADHD - early onset. im in Holland and they just aren't ontop of it like they are in the US. she suggested TV every night - as a way to calm him down and keen him focussed. this is exactly the opposite to what ive read - all books say NO TV for adhd kids. can anyone who has had good advice form a doc tell me what your doc's thoughts were on this issue. big thanks. 9 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I'm going out on a limb here: You are far from family and have a very active 18 mo with little chance for a break. You wonder how a child could possibly be sooooo active and all over the place. And you are exhausted and trying to parent perefectly. Sound right? Not to say that ds may not have adhd eventually (btu you don't wan to wish for that). In the mean time, he needs lot and lots of outdoor run around exercise in safe place where you can perhaps sit while he runs. And late afternoon, post-nap an play time, etc. when you are very tired, put on some TV so you can be a good mom at bedtime. TRy not to do TV after dinne or bath, but before. And have an organized, very calm bedtime routine, if possible. [ Reply | More ]

I posted on youbemom to you...please look into sensory integration disorder. Your DS is probably a sensory seeker. The behavior in sensory seeking kids is very much like ADD/ADHD. And FWIW, you cannot diagnose an 18 mo with ADHD - the average age they diagnose is 6-7. [ Reply | More ]

I'd stick with the bottle until age one then switch to a straw cup or sippy cup. It's a bit early for either sippy or open cup, which are 8 month plus skills. I'd go cold turkey off bottles at age one with whatever you settle on, but know that oral motor specialists really dislike sippy cups and far prefer straw cups. [ Reply | More ]
