[ - ] Anyone have a recent toxoplasmosis infection in pg? I've got it and am looking for a little reassurance -- we're in a "wait and see" place till amnio results come back, so in the absence of real information, I'm looking for cyber-comfort... 20 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

no, it must have been food though bc no cat and no gardening. i've learned that although most people think it just comes from cats, most infections come from food (undercooked meats, etc). no clue when though--hopefully a couple months before pg, but no way to tell. [ Reply | More ]

no, I've got it. the only question is whether it's crossed the placenta and infected the baby. but the longer I got it before the pregnancy, the smaller the chances the baby's been infected. if i got it during pg, higher chance of infection. it's not harmful to me, just poor db if it has it. are you European ? big big numbers of European women (women raised in Europe) will test positive for toxo, but it isn't going to effect your fetus... it is long standing exposure and different than our American cat litter (for lack of a better term) exposure... [ Reply | More ]

no, regular old american here. you're right that if it's an old infection, it poses no risk. but unfortunately for me, mine is a "very recent" infection- they can't pinpoint it exactly. but the most common cause of infection in the US is actually food, not cat litter. [ Reply | More ]

yeah, in my crazier moments I've actually been thinking that if i'd had a crystal ball I would have gone and had a bunch of raw meat years before I got pg so I wouldn't have gotten it now! It seems like the kind of thing they should have a vax for, but I guess they don't. Maybe bc it's so rare- I dunno. [ Reply | More ]

op- sorry, I didn't see this earlier. my doc screens for it in the initial bloodwork. many do not, so I was just lucky that she did. I don't garden or have a cat, so it was probably from food. I'm not sure what the rec is for pg women who garden, but at the very least be sure to wash your hands well. or just give it up during the pg- imho, it's not worth the risk. this has been such torture and if I could go back I would eat char every piece of meat I've eaten over the last year and wash every fruit and veggie seven times over I would just to avoid this... but we finally have good news, thank god. gl. ok, a friend of mine had a surgury as a first step but some kind of radio after. I think if it is small and very early stage you can start with the surgery since the tumor doesn't have to shrink. But I'm sure the doctor knows better than me. [ Reply | More ]

imho i would always follow up. lost mom to bc years ago that was supposidly cured. she did chemo and rad, but still passed... i couldn't live with myself if i didn't attack it with everything. maybe she can talk about how they now can check tumors to see what exactly (based on their genetic makeup)they are most apt to respond to... If you choose a lumpectomy, you will need radiation. If you choose a full mastectomy, sometimes you can skip the radiation. If it is estrogen-receptor positive, you will go on tamoxifen or seomthing similar. Depending on the stage, they may also do chemo. And Herceptin if the tumor is HER- positive. [ Reply | More ]

op- part of my concern is this- when I saw the doc last week, i asked her about it and said something like "so as long as they don't see anything on US, I shouldn't worry?" and her response was something like "well, we always worry bc it means the placenta is tearing a little, even if we can't see it." and since then I've been wondering why, if that's the case, there was not some further discussion about what to do about it... at what point did they restrict your activity? what does "modified" mean? thanks for info [ Reply | More ]
