Anyone have a recent toxoplasmosis infection in pg? I've got it and am looking for a little reassurance -- we're in a "wait and see" place till amnio results come back, so in the absence of real information, I'm looking for cyber-comfort... [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

no, it must have been food though bc no cat and no gardening. i've learned that although most people think it just comes from cats, most infections come from food (undercooked meats, etc). no clue when though--hopefully a couple months before pg, but no way to tell. [ Reply | More ]

So potentially it might not be harmful? You test positive but don't "have it" anymore? [ Reply | More ]

how did you find out? Was it through initial blood work? [ Reply | More ]

no, I've got it. the only question is whether it's crossed the placenta and infected the baby. but the longer I got it before the pregnancy, the smaller the chances the baby's been infected. if i got it during pg, higher chance of infection. it's not harmful to me, just poor db if it has it. np - actually, many people test for having had it. there's no danger if you got it prior to being pregnant, however, it can be problematic if contracted during pregnancy. [ Reply | More ]

are you European ? big big numbers of European women (women raised in Europe) will test positive for toxo, but it isn't going to effect your fetus... it is long standing exposure and different than our American cat litter (for lack of a better term) exposure... [ Reply | More ]

no, regular old american here. you're right that if it's an old infection, it poses no risk. but unfortunately for me, mine is a "very recent" infection- they can't pinpoint it exactly. but the most common cause of infection in the US is actually food, not cat litter. [ Reply | More ]

just checking... nanny had a freakout and waited days before mentioning it. she's from latvia where they are all exposed in the meat and such... took a shot... i'm sure you'll be fine though. good luck [ Reply | More ]

yeah, in my crazier moments I've actually been thinking that if i'd had a crystal ball I would have gone and had a bunch of raw meat years before I got pg so I wouldn't have gotten it now! It seems like the kind of thing they should have a vax for, but I guess they don't. Maybe bc it's so rare- I dunno. [ Reply | More ]

How did you find out you had it? I don't know anything about it really, but I garden a lot so now I'm worried (although I do always where gloves, just never a mask). [ Reply | More ]

op- sorry, I didn't see this earlier. my doc screens for it in the initial bloodwork. many do not, so I was just lucky that she did. I don't garden or have a cat, so it was probably from food. I'm not sure what the rec is for pg women who garden, but at the very least be sure to wash your hands well. or just give it up during the pg- imho, it's not worth the risk. this has been such torture and if I could go back I would eat char every piece of meat I've eaten over the last year and wash every fruit and veggie seven times over I would just to avoid this... but we finally have good news, thank god. gl. i was positive, they send the test out to that lab in california to test the age of the infection. as long as it predates the conception, it's ok. mine did predate it, but it was a nail-biter. [ Reply | More ]

yes, I've already done the CA lab test and it's a recent infection-- but I just got the amnio results and it's all CLEAR! Not sure if anyone is going to see this post, but just wanted to put it out there! [ Reply | More ]
