[ - ] I hate my OB. She always gives me a hard time about my weight gain, but I really don't think it is excessive. I am 22 weeks and up 10 pounds. That's not too bad, right? Make me feel better! (And no, I wasn't overweight to start with!) She says you shouldn't gain more than five lbs in the first half of the pregnancy. I don't remember her being this tough in my first pregnancy. 11 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

that sounds totally NUTS to me, to be honest. 10 pounds in 22 weeks seems totally reasonable if you were not overweight before. I know very few people who gained 5 lbs or less in the first half. don't sweat it at all, but maybe think about a new ob if you go for #3 so you don't spend the whole time worrying about your weight without reason- gl. yes and yes. they asked me if i wanted a plastic surgeon and i asked what the downside would be. they said some insurance companies won't cover it and asked me which insurance co i use and then i was told to use the plastic surgeon. fwiw, the doctor is saying they are reimbursing him at the "participating provider rate" and he wants more b/c he's not a participating provider. the doctors in the hospital (when I worked in hosp billing this was often a problem with the anesthesiologists) don't have to be contracted with your insurance, even if the hospital is. If you look at it from their perspective, they're giving you a service, and you have to pay them, and your insurance is your business. It is definitely the responsibility of the patient to know his or her own coverage, but it's not like you're going to know which doctors are contracted with your insurance when you're lying on a gurney, or when an anesthesiologist comes in to talk to you just prior to surgery! It's a problem, definitely [ Reply | More ]

OR: Rules are different now with HMOs. For something like anesthesiology, where you are not given a choice in doctors, the insurance contract with the hospital and all their contracted doctors says you are not obligated to pay the difference (most HMOs will pay a little more, and the anesthesiologists now are given salaries through hospitals in addition to the insurance money). Interesting. I stand corrected, though when we interviewed there, Babby basically looked at the file and told us to come back the following year - and we interviewed before they came to DD's school, so she knew basically nothing about DD except her ERB scores (which were high, with a great report - that was not the problem). That's because there is no straight answer - it really depends on your child. Conventional wisdom is that the coeds are easier but only the SS schools were interested in my August DD and she got into a TT. (This was a couple of years ago.) [ Reply | More ]

np: The interesting thing is that it seems to be very grade dependent. I have summer dc too so asked all my friends with older kids in private schools. Some have several, some none at all. Even in the same school it seems to vary by grade quite a lot. [ Reply | More ]

I gather that once they decide to take one, they take a few more to even things out. They would never have one August birthday and then have the next-youngest be May. So if there is a sib or two on the young side whom they want to take, that is actually good news for the unconnected young applicants. [ Reply | More ]
