Which schools are known to reject summer bdays? My PSD won't give me a straight answer on this. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Nearly all of them will reject MOST summer birthdays(especially BOYS). All of them will take SOME summer birthdays (especially GIRLS). [ Reply | More ]

^^schools like Buckley send too young letters to kids as old as May b-day...Coeds are more apt to take young summer kids--but only 'great ones, again, more likely girls' especially hard if your dc is NOT a sibling. [ Reply | More ]

okay applying with early July dd, assuming ERB's are good which schools will put her in the reject list soley based on b-day? [ Reply | More ]

none will do it soley based on bday. It's definitely easier for a girl than a boy and if she's chatty and can draw pretty pictures she'll get in somewhere--just may not be as TT a school as if she were the same kid six months older... [ Reply | More ]

np. Spence is the only school I know with the rep that they reject young summer bdays solely due to age, but even so I have heard of a few young summers there. I think most schools will consider her seriously and if her scores and preschool report are good and she's mature, she has a reasonable chance of getting in somewhere. [ Reply | More ]

Spence definitely doesn't reject based entirely on age - I know several young summers there. OP, if your daughter is mature and has great scores she will do fine - early July is not a nonstarter for a girl at any of the schools. [ Reply | More ]

The truth is almost all of them take some summer bdays. It might be better if you post which schools you're interested in. If anyone here has a dc in one of the schools you name they might be able to tell you if there are young summers in dc's class. [ Reply | More ]

We're at B and have been surprised by how many young summer girls there are. None that I know of are sibs. We know other young summer girls at Dalton and Trinity. I imagine all the schools have them, but I don't know them first-hand. [ Reply | More ]

My dh actually asked Brearley teacher about summer girls and she said she only knew of one in the grade. [ Reply | More ]

What grade does she teach? We have 2 DDs in the LS and there are 6-7 young summers in one of their grades and 3-4 in the other. [ Reply | More ]

ECFS is actually pretty good about sticking to the age cut off in their application, meaning the summer kids really are the youngest. [ Reply | More ]

Just curious -- ECFS and HM are pretty much polar opposites -- how does one like both? [ Reply | More ]

OP: I like ECFS but worry a little that it is not so academically challenging in the younger years and have heard good things about HM (from parents who go there and seem quite normal to me) so i thought I would check it out. No opinion as of yet [ Reply | More ]

Poster below with August DD - Dalton is pretty anti-young summer. ECFS and HM don't really redshirt, certainly not girls - HM has a policy against it and I know several young summers at ECFS. Brearley and Spence are case-by-case, as is Chapin. Of all of the schools on your list, I think Dalton is actually the least likely to take an unconnected young summer birthday. [ Reply | More ]

np. Funny because we know a young August girl who got into D this year. Not connected, not $$$ or anything else you might think wold give an edge. [ Reply | More ]

Interesting. I stand corrected, though when we interviewed there, Babby basically looked at the file and told us to come back the following year - and we interviewed before they came to DD's school, so she knew basically nothing about DD except her ERB scores (which were high, with a great report - that was not the problem). I have heard of a fair number of D sibs told to wait a year with early summer birthdays. [ Reply | More ]

Is your dd a sib? What's interesting to me is that of all the young summer girls we know none are sibs and all the old summer girls are sibs. [ Reply | More ]

Dalton mom here and I think summer girl has to be very very advanced in maturity to be accepted. I read about the one August girl but I have to think she is very extraordinary and mature for her age. I think most August kids are not that socially advanced. [ Reply | More ]

Honestly, the girl we know is not super mature. She's very bright but socially she's an average middle class Manhattan dc. [ Reply | More ]

That's because there is no straight answer - it really depends on your child. Conventional wisdom is that the coeds are easier but only the SS schools were interested in my August DD and she got into a TT. (This was a couple of years ago.) [ Reply | More ]

np: The interesting thing is that it seems to be very grade dependent. I have summer dc too so asked all my friends with older kids in private schools. Some have several, some none at all. Even in the same school it seems to vary by grade quite a lot. [ Reply | More ]

I gather that once they decide to take one, they take a few more to even things out. They would never have one August birthday and then have the next-youngest be May. So if there is a sib or two on the young side whom they want to take, that is actually good news for the unconnected young applicants. [ Reply | More ]
