You obviously don't have a dc at Hunter. Most of them don't enter K as true readers. A few are reading fluently, some are emergent readers and many are not reading at all. And some dc are still not reading by the end of K. Hunter admin and teachers will be the first to tell you not to worry if a dc isn't reading in K. [ Reply | More ]

Have you looked at the book? How much do you know about the "method"? Do you realize it's essentially just drilling dc with flash cards? I can't think of a faster, more reliable way to kill most dc's interest in learning to read. Maybe there are some dc who enjoy that kind of learning. If yours is one of them, go for it I guess. Personally, I'd just keep reading to dc. [ Reply | More ]

We didn't use it, but I have a relative who did. She had mixed results; her dc wasn't really into it but did mange to memorize a great number of words by sight. It wasn't reading, though. To recognize the words and say them out loud is not the same as reading with comprehension. She tried to turn me and DH onto the system by showing us a promotional video put out by the people who invented the method - they have a whole program, not just for reading. They do math, music, science facts, and so on. It was disturbing. These dc were like trained monkeys. I don't mean to offend, but that's all I could think of as I watched the video. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, I'm serious. I'm not talking just about their approach to reading, but their method in a more general sense. What's the use of having a 3 yo who's been drilled and can recite the periodic table by memory but who doesn't understand what elements or atoms are? It's pointless and takes time away from developmentally appropriate activities. It's the same idea with reading. To read with comprehension the dc needs to do more than just say the words on the flashcard. [ Reply | More ]

doesn't really even have to be "special." it's a continuum and it's developmental. dd had problems early on, but once she got it, she was off like a rocket. she's now an honors student with distinction. but she didn't need more pressure from me when she was struggling to read in 1st and 2nd grade. We got extra help from the school [ Reply | More ]

This is not a competition!!!!! Your child will learn eventually. That is what elementary school is for. And don't give me that "too lazy" BS. Reading to your child every night before bed and whenever she wants to be read to takes up a lot of time. Going to the library, the book store, etc. [ Reply | More ]

I think it's unfair for people to assume that kids who know how to read before age 5yo or 4yo were drilled at home. My dc learned to read without me drilling anything. Dc played with Leapfrog toys and starfall - I didn't push dc to do these, dc loved to - and learned to read. I resent people assuming that I drilled dc. No, some kids just pick it up on their own and there are so many toys out there (tv shows and online games) that they're exposed to it. Kids who are really interested will pick it up earlier than others who are not so interested. [ Reply | More ]

Supposedly okay up to 200mg/day but I avoided completely during 1st tri after studies in January linked high caffeine consumption with miscarriage rates [ Reply | More ]

Not at all in first pg but I've been having a soda a day during this one. I used to be a big starbucks drinker but lost my taste for coffee. I looked at the caffeine content in a small glass bottle coke and it's about 23mg. I've heard 300/day is okay. [ Reply | More ]
