Old enough to understand and be taught what others should be allowed to see and touch on her body and what is private. This is for her own protection as well as learning to own and respect her own body. 20 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

We toured the school and were definitely impressed by the teachers. But I felt the facilities were pretty bleak and I don't think there is great fundraising from the PTA. We are not AA, but I don't think that would matter to my son in the slightest (in fact his closest friend in school is AA as is my daughter's), but we are zoned for a very good school with good fund raising and good facilities that I may choose over TAG if that is our placement, but I haven't decided one way or the other. [ Reply | More ]

I think OP's "more ethnically diverse" means more white/Asian students, since current demographics of TAG is mainly black/Hispanic (less than 5% of white/Asian each). [ Reply | More ]

Who knows? It can't get any less diverse than it currently is. We have poor district g&t options and could end up placed at TAG. We would consider it, but would probably hope to attend an open house to get a better feel for the place. I wasn't crazy about the location or facilities but people do speak highly of the teachers. I personally wonder how receptive the administration will be to "increased" diversity. [ Reply | More ]

i toured the school and I was very disappointed. Art teacher said she taught the kids to draw a person so the kids don't draw chicken scratch. I mean, it is an art class, not a reading or math class and I don't get why the need to drill. They lack much of the extras bec the parents don't raise any money. [ Reply | More ]

It is not the color of the children, but the resources at the school. Given budget cuts from the DOE, schools that don't have active PTAs that raise a lot of money are going to be going without a lot of extras and in some cases maybe basics. If you are zoned for a school that offers those things and has decent teachers, it may be worth it to sacrifice peer group for proximity and facilities [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I live on the UWS and have for the twenty years I've been in NYC. We have a 3 yo and are starting to think about fleeing the city because our Zoned school isn't good and we can't afford private school. BUT I hear that public schools on the UES are better generally so as long as we're willing to move, why not move across town rather than out of the city altogether. Advice on UES neighborhoods and schools for this UWS girl? We could afford a $700-800K apartment for the three of us. TIA! 23 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Why move to UES? 87 and 199 are good, although 700-800K won't get you more than a 1 bedroom. That would be true on the UES too, though. [ Reply | More ]

Then I'll pick it up. I live in 145's zone too and I don't know a child who goes there. There are public school alternatives (Hunter, G&Ts, lottery (MSC, 87, 75, 199, maybe 84), Special Music School) and also private school - apply for The New School at Columbia's lottery, Manhattan Country School has sliding scale tuition, and apply for financial aid at other private schools. At worst, dc will go to 145 for kindergarten and you can spend that year looking for alternatives. [ Reply | More ]
