Do we think TAG will be more ethnically diverse this year? To be perfectly blunt, how many white/Asian families ranked it in a spot where you think you might actually get it? And if you get it, will you attend? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

We are AA, and listed 3rd. If we are placed, I'll send my dd there since we don't have any better choice. (though wishing A or NEST) [ Reply | More ]

99. I heard teachers at TAG is wonderful. Though school seems to be more traditional than I want it to be, she'll have better peer group than her local ps, I assume. [ Reply | More ]

We toured the school and were definitely impressed by the teachers. But I felt the facilities were pretty bleak and I don't think there is great fundraising from the PTA. We are not AA, but I don't think that would matter to my son in the slightest (in fact his closest friend in school is AA as is my daughter's), but we are zoned for a very good school with good fund raising and good facilities that I may choose over TAG if that is our placement, but I haven't decided one way or the other. I think OP's "more ethnically diverse" means more white/Asian students, since current demographics of TAG is mainly black/Hispanic (less than 5% of white/Asian each). [ Reply | More ]

Who knows? It can't get any less diverse than it currently is. We have poor district g&t options and could end up placed at TAG. We would consider it, but would probably hope to attend an open house to get a better feel for the place. I wasn't crazy about the location or facilities but people do speak highly of the teachers. I personally wonder how receptive the administration will be to "increased" diversity. [ Reply | More ]

We are a white family with no district options and ranked it third. If we get it, we will probably try it although we didn't make it to an open house and would love to be able to tour it first. [ Reply | More ]

Pretty much the same situation for us. I toured, but it was just a 15 minute walk through the building in the morning and the kids/teachers weren't in the classrooms. [ Reply | More ]

i toured the school and I was very disappointed. Art teacher said she taught the kids to draw a person so the kids don't draw chicken scratch. I mean, it is an art class, not a reading or math class and I don't get why the need to drill. They lack much of the extras bec the parents don't raise any money. [ Reply | More ]

Does this mean you won't attend if you get in - if there are mostly black and hispanic kids? [ Reply | More ]

It is not the color of the children, but the resources at the school. Given budget cuts from the DOE, schools that don't have active PTAs that raise a lot of money are going to be going without a lot of extras and in some cases maybe basics. If you are zoned for a school that offers those things and has decent teachers, it may be worth it to sacrifice peer group for proximity and facilities [ Reply | More ]

So what does that have to do with the ethnic diversity at the school? [ Reply | More ]
