I live on the UWS and have for the twenty years I've been in NYC. We have a 3 yo and are starting to think about fleeing the city because our Zoned school isn't good and we can't afford private school. BUT I hear that public schools on the UES are better generally so as long as we're willing to move, why not move across town rather than out of the city altogether. Advice on UES neighborhoods and schools for this UWS girl? We could afford a $700-800K apartment for the three of us. TIA! [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Why move to UES? 87 and 199 are good, although 700-800K won't get you more than a 1 bedroom. That would be true on the UES too, though. [ Reply | More ]

These days you may find a 2BR in UES for close to that price if you keep your eyes open. [ Reply | More ]

Don't make any fast moves. The DOE is seriously considering re-zoning parts of District 2 (which covers the UES, in addition to parts of Midtown East). What's your zoned school anyway? [ Reply | More ]

District 2 goes all the way down to tribeca and the rezoning is for west village. [ Reply | More ]

D2 is also talking about rezoning on the UES for the 151 zone, since it's obvious that 151 isn't coming back. [ Reply | More ]

Then I'll pick it up. I live in 145's zone too and I don't know a child who goes there. There are public school alternatives (Hunter, G&Ts, lottery (MSC, 87, 75, 199, maybe 84), Special Music School) and also private school - apply for The New School at Columbia's lottery, Manhattan Country School has sliding scale tuition, and apply for financial aid at other private schools. At worst, dc will go to 145 for kindergarten and you can spend that year looking for alternatives. [ Reply | More ]

how is 199 an 'alternative'? Oh, I suppose if you move into its zone, it is. And 87? Same thing. 84 stinks, so I don't even know why you mention that. Clearly you don't know that much...do you? [ Reply | More ]

the schools are generally good, but they are all facing the same problem of overcrowding. rumor is that ps6 will have over 30 in k come september. [ Reply | More ]

I wouldn't be surprised if PS 6 starts investigating whether or not the kids actually really reside in zone.... rumor has it that a huge percentage don't really live in zone (use other people's address, rent a studio they don't really live in, etc). [ Reply | More ]
