[ - ] I'm worried about my 3yo ds's weight, but it's tricky for me to see clearly b/c I have my own history with eating disorders. Watching him naked in the sprinkler today, I kept thinking about how his belly is so much fatter than the other kids', but I don't know if I'm overreacting or overfeeding him. 12 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Have to admit that I've had the same worries for my 2.5yo dd. She's always been 'husky', as some have described her... and still has that protruding pot belly that none of the other kids her age seem to have in such a pronounced way. Everyone keeps telling me not to worry, they even out. So we'll just have to wait and see. Try not to worry too much -- it can't be good for you or your kid. In the meantime, just check in with ped and do your best to instill good healthy eating habits. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] How do I pay my nanny this summer since she will be staying out at our summer place (1 hour away) from Mon-Fri? Do we need to pay hourly overnight? I would think not since my two kids sleep through the night and we'll be home in the evenings and early AM to take care of the kids. Then again, we are taking her away from home. Then again, she will be relieved of her regular 1 1/2 hour commute in from Queens. 4 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I offered her exactly that. She told me other nannies told her they were receiving a per hour overtime rate for all hours of the night. I think that's over the top. She is 23 yrs old and has a boyfriend in Queens, but she did not seem very bothered that she would be away during the week for 8 weeks. She needs the extra money and she will also be able to go home for a night or two sometimes. [ Reply | More ]

I think what you are offering is more than fair. Everyone I know who has help at their summer house pays a flat weekly rate similar to a NYC weekly rate. It sounds like you are already offering more. If it was a one week thing I could see what she is saying but for the whole summer, that's crazy expensive. [ Reply | More ]

There are many options other than feeling entitled to a citywide. Any kid who scored 97+ is *just* as entitled. Lottery? Move? Private? Help make change? [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 06.10.08, 07:49 PM Flag

But here's the thing. The sort of person who makes change, who demands more from the public school system, is the sort of person who is called "entitled" all the time. BTW private is crushingly expensive, beyond the means of most people who live in district 13. Moving is an option, of course, but most of the suburbs with good schools are pretty expensive too. I feel lucky that I can afford to rent in D2 and have a decent option: I don't judge people who can't and don't. [ Reply | More ]

I don't feel entitled to a citywide per se - I just want a better education for my child at a school that has an administration that is welcoming to parents that want to be involved in their child's education. That is not the case with the district schools that we have access to. You can't change a school that isn't interested in changing. BTDT. Private too expensive. Tried lottery -- guess what its a lottery -- we were number 166 in a lottery with only 45 open seats. Move -- also expensive and can't afford to buy into a "good school" district. It is easy to say someone is acting entitled -- all I want is a good education option for my kid. [ Reply | More ]
