I considered it for same aged boys but we also have a baby so we decided on renting a beach house instead. I heard it was cheesy but kids enjoy it. I also remember something about staying 1/2 hour away in Philly or Princeton (can't remember where) b/c it's a lot nicer. [ Reply | More ]

I've been there many times. Admission is a bit expensive, but they have many kids rides (little kids) that are perfect for your kids. And, those rides tend to be less crowded, so don't have the long wait. Also, there's now a gigantic water park -- I saw it last time, but didn't go, so don't know how that is for younger kids, but it was packed. Hershey Motor Lodge is okay, get most of the Hershey Hotel amenities. If you can afford the Hershey Hotel itself, it's very fancy. The lodge is still expensive, but less so. Lots of chains around, and they are fine -- the usual. [ Reply | More ]

^^^you can also do the factory tour, as or mentioned, and there's a museum with a pretty good children's room as well and botantical gardens have a wonderful "children's garden". So there's plenty to do besides the park itself. [ Reply | More ]

I went when I had just turned 3 and still remember it. It was one of my favorite places I went as a child. I really can't remember why now, we didn't do that much. I think I just liked the street lights shaped like kisses, riding on a ride in a hershey bar shaped car, and getting to eat a really huge ice cream sundae. I also went to Sesame Street Park and it was equally legendary in my mind. [ Reply | More ]

A wise teacher once told me that children have all of these concepts - death, violence, abandonment - in their minds already and we can address them or ignore them which then leaves the dc to ponder the issues alone. The discussion came up when I mentioned that I was hesitant to read Babar to ds because of the huner that kills his mom at the beginning. She said to snap out of it and teach my child how to deal with unpleasantness... She said it's not necessarilly our society, but how we develop... [ Reply | More ]

I could not agree more. DC delt with death at age four and did extremely well. We purposely took to a memorial service at six - we talk about guns in both positive and negative light. The children bring this up - its the adults who get all weird about it, maybe because they were not taught its just the way life is. [ Reply | More ]

NP: this came up in our 2nd grade class when I happened to be there. There was a "Code Blue" drill, which means intruder in the building, so the classroom teachers lock the doors. Many of the boys immediately made fake guns with their fingers. Teacher questioned them about why they felt the need to do this, since the door was locked. One boy pointed out that someone with a gun could shoot through the door. An interesting discussion ensued about how video games might be over-influencing them. Girls in the class seemed mystified by all this. [ Reply | More ]

Yeah, kindergarten but that has turned him onto Capt Underpants and Junie P Jones (sp?). As I said above, I'm not an anti gun dad and we are not an anti gun house. His favorite thing lately is writing books. He'll take a stack of paper, fold them in half, then make a ten page book and staple it. He writes stories and illustrates. His books are interactive often times. Like a book about what he wants to do with a friend, or stuff like that, OR super heroes/aliens. But even the aliens and robots are gun-less. He loves to read, too. (I had a catch with his little brother the other day and #1 looked at us like we were insane.) [ Reply | More ]

NP: I have a kid like that and I also like to shoot (I'm a mom, but I really like guns, I discovered sort of by accident that shooting is fun and I'm naturally good at it, though I am politically anti-NRA).. we got a daisy air rifle and DC sort of likes it, but guns are not really a part of his imaginary play, even though is friends seem sort of gun crazy. At around age 4, he pleaded a cogent case for why we should let him have a water gun, explaining that he understood the difference between a real gun and a water gun. [ Reply | More ]

He is a hard worker, very bright and has quite a few contacts, so I think he'll find something by August. And my grandmother is in her 80s, so this trip will be really special as of course we don't know how much longer she will be able to travel like this. I just started questioning it and dh knows I really want to go and he's super easy going, so I didn't want to ruin his job search. So, what should he tell people like if they want him to interview while we'll be gone? Just that he's out of town that whole week, but can do an interview such and such day?
