i have had au pairs but have always been at home too... IMHO it is a risky thing as the girl arrives and then you really get to know them. I wouldn't feel safe leaving the home with young children solely in an au pair's care until i had really established that they could handle it. A nanny you interview and meet, an au pair you write emails to and maybe speak with once or twice on the phone and then they are on your doorstep. [ Reply | More ]

Then I guess the big variable would be when the girl arrives will she be what you're expecting ? They all sound great until they are here and then some of them are really capable and some are not. Right now I have one I am OK leaving my kids with for the afternoon, but she is not one I would leave a 4 mth old with nor is she who she seemed and professed to be when we "matched"... but he is 5. he doesn't understand the relative replacement cost of items. he's receiving a much more severe punishment than if he's tossed her ice cream cone in the air, even though the two crimes are essentially the same. adults understand that, so it would make sense for adults to take on replacement cost when they are careless with something. for a kid, the punishment should be the same regardless of how much the broken object costs. two things. Your 5yo already understand the concept of money and financial responsibility? Yes, good point. But 5yos don't act rationally all the time. I think my main point was that you could take anything away from him in order to punish him. we have loved it and our 2 dcs have thrived in the environment. But there is a wide range of "montessori" so it's important to research and tour to get a handle on just how each particular school does things. Also there are 2 groups who "certify" schools, the AMI and AMS. AMI is more hardcore. AMS is more Montessori-American style or Montessori-lite. Our DD was in AMI and DS in AMS. Each had advantages and things we wished were different. All that said, I don't think Montessori will be the best thing for DC #3 so we're looking at other options. It really depends on the kid.
