my ds is obsessed with warriors, pirates, weapons of all kinds. I want to apply to friends seminary - will we be a bad fit at a quaker school? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

they are all that way. Give them anything and they will "weaponize". Go for whichever school you want... [ Reply | More ]

No they are not all that way. My five year old doesn't "weaponize" things. I have no idea why not, it is not like we have demonized guns (heck, I still shoot recreationally every once in a while) but he doesn't. [ Reply | More ]

I am jealous... I don't know a boy who doesn't do it. In fact, my friend's son (they are from Greece and not our more gun-happy culture)made his sanwich into a pistol the other day... chewed himself a gun... [ Reply | More ]

you can probably google it. I don't want to misquote. But it focused on the super hero (cowboys vs Indains gasp!) games that are so common in young males and the reason they are - the positives. Try going to the newsweek web site. I enjoyed reading it. But, it was preaching to the choir. I never limited "gun" play. [ Reply | More ]

A wise teacher once told me that children have all of these concepts - death, violence, abandonment - in their minds already and we can address them or ignore them which then leaves the dc to ponder the issues alone. The discussion came up when I mentioned that I was hesitant to read Babar to ds because of the huner that kills his mom at the beginning. She said to snap out of it and teach my child how to deal with unpleasantness... She said it's not necessarilly our society, but how we develop... [ Reply | More ]

I could not agree more. DC delt with death at age four and did extremely well. We purposely took to a memorial service at six - we talk about guns in both positive and negative light. The children bring this up - its the adults who get all weird about it, maybe because they were not taught its just the way life is. [ Reply | More ]

Death I realize must be discussed and since we discuss these things and weapons and all that, why is it still a need of theirs to immitate fighting and killing ? [ Reply | More ]

NP: this came up in our 2nd grade class when I happened to be there. There was a "Code Blue" drill, which means intruder in the building, so the classroom teachers lock the doors. Many of the boys immediately made fake guns with their fingers. Teacher questioned them about why they felt the need to do this, since the door was locked. One boy pointed out that someone with a gun could shoot through the door. An interesting discussion ensued about how video games might be over-influencing them. Girls in the class seemed mystified by all this. [ Reply | More ]

Yeah, kindergarten but that has turned him onto Capt Underpants and Junie P Jones (sp?). As I said above, I'm not an anti gun dad and we are not an anti gun house. (I grew up shooting and was in the NRA at 13. I stopped paying dues or shooting in their events years ago for political reasons.) He just has never been really into that stuff. Then again he is not the stereotypical boy in many ways. [ Reply | More ]

His favorite thing lately is writing books. He'll take a stack of paper, fold them in half, then make a ten page book and staple it. He writes stories and illustrates. His books are interactive often times. Like a book about what he wants to do with a friend, or stuff like that, OR super heroes/aliens. But even the aliens and robots are gun-less. He loves to read, too. (I had a catch with his little brother the other day and #1 looked at us like we were insane.) [ Reply | More ]

NP: I have a kid like that and I also like to shoot (I'm a mom, but I really like guns, I discovered sort of by accident that shooting is fun and I'm naturally good at it, though I am politically anti-NRA).. we got a daisy air rifle and DC sort of likes it, but guns are not really a part of his imaginary play, even though is friends seem sort of gun crazy. At around age 4, he pleaded a cogent case for why we should let him have a water gun, explaining that he understood the difference between a real gun and a water gun. [ Reply | More ]

np: disagree. have a 5 yo ds and he has zero interest in weapons. really into playing with various stuffed animals/characters (mickey mouse, etc.) and drawing. has never even been into spiderman, superman or other superheroes. loves board games, puzzles and does tons of imaginitive play, but nothing with weapons. know several other boys same age who are really into cars and trains, but not weapons. nothing to lose by applying. as long as you subscribe to the quaker philosophy and like the school, I wouldn't worry about not fitting in because of what you ds is into right now. interests can and do change. fwiw, just like many other nyc privates, friends is extremely difficult to get into.
