[ - ] Kind of off the racism in cartoons post: We are considering moving back from NYC to the town I grew up in NJ. It's always been racially diverse, but now there is a very large South American Hispanic population. From what my parents say, it's very segregated both in schools and in town (they are in same schools, but not really any interaction). I fear that we would be taking DC out of a place that shows real diversity into one where my kids grow up thinking Hispanic people mow lawns and clean houses. Am I overthinking this? 7 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Sorry, had a phone call. That is true - nearly all these people are new here, so they do not speak much English. Over time I assume that will change. But right now for DC's childhoods it's very apparent - the difference in language and culture, the disparity in incomes. I would try to make sure DC had friends that were Hispanic, but it could be difficult in that they don't mix much even in school. Thank you both for the perspectives. [ Reply | More ]

I went to school in Princeton. Keep in mind that this may just be the issue of the day. I doubt that even in NYC kids who only speak spanish are that well integrated. When you look at LL scores, you have to be careful for a couple of reasons. There is a self contained special ed class at LL which has nothing to do with the g&t program but the scores are often combined AND, LL is such a small school that if ONE child is sick or having a bad test day - it affects the overall percentage much more than in a larger general ed school. LL has great scores, is a great school and a nice option for many. Many district 2 general eds are the same. Choice. It's a good thing. [ Reply | More ]

True - for some, but many (in some years, most) LL kids are not zoned for 198. D2 is extremely large. And if you account for the inclusion of the self-contained special needs classes, LL scores are usually among the highest in the city (in some years, the highest) and definitely highest in D2. All that said, 198 doesn't "suck," but it is much larger (more classes per grade, though the class size is smaller than LL) and the teaching is more narrow given the make up of the student population. pros and cons to each. 234 is overcrowded but raises tons of money for specials, etc. and it's nice for dc's classmates to be neighbors. it's reputation is well-established. there's no tension between g&t and gen ed dcs, obviously. 11 has more of a mix of dcs. smaller classes. not every parent makes a gazillion dollars a year. etc. the peer group at 234 is probably very good, so i'm not sure that makes a difference. We are at 11 G&T. I love it there and we live close. If someone offered us a spot at 234, 6 or one of the 'great gen eds' I definitely wouldn't take it over 11 because I wouldn't want to commute. I think the education at 11 G&T is just as good (and the gen ed will probably improve a LOT starting in K next year). The unknown of course is that now they are claiming the district G&Ts are going to be truly 'accelerated' which they aren't now (they claim they just go more 'in depth'). If you truly believe your dc needs an accelerated class then I'd say do 11 and you could always go back to your zoned school if it didn't work out. My dcs are in G&T but I don't think they really need advanced classes so personally, since it's elementary school, I'd pick the closer one. [ Reply | More ]

^school, I'd just pick the one that was closer and easier commute-wise. Also if I lived in a good gen ed zone like 234 and had younger sibs, I'd be more inclined to stay with zoned school as then you won't have to worry about getting #2 in in a few years. I know tons of sibs this year at various G&Ts and citywides who did not make the required cutoffs. [ Reply | More ]
