Took it in K and DD got around 92-94%. Retook in first and she got 99% OLSAT, 98% Bracken. Bracken test section on which she had probs: shapes (apparently tested some weird shapes). We think big difference was use of KTSS for 1st grade test (same test given as for K, I think, so the prep was useful) and general after-school sutdying (maybe 1.5 hours total a week) in reading and math to make up for what she wasn't learning in her K program. Given the sheer # of children to be tested, I don't think there is any way to use the Stanford Binet (although it's a better measurement of giftedness). I don't think there would even be enough qualified SB testers, even if you granted fee waivers to those who could not afford the testing. I would drop the Bracken, use the OLSAT and require each citywide to do an onsite evaluation for qualifiers at 98% or higher. I would give the district programs freedom to decide whether to do an onsite for their programs, but wouldn't require it. District programs with no onsite would be filled by score -- RAW Scores, not percentiles/lotteries. [ Reply | More ]

We are in district 14. DD is going to Nest. Our selection form had one district G&T at PS 132. It is new for this year. Assuming they didn't remove it due to lack of students, it should still be there. There were only 17 who scored more than 90% in D14. I love my family and I know all the PC platatudes we always hear, but I am so depressed some days... I do a lot of "what could I have been" monologues in my head... [ Reply | More ]

I used to love my job and had been in quite a senior position but I got fed up with it for various reasons. I would much rather be at home and I dread the day I have to get another job. I'm really not sure what I would do. [ Reply | More ]

Get up, make breakfast, shower, get #1 dressed, take him to school, go to work, work shitty job, pick #1 and #2 up from babysitter on some days (other days they are already home), go home, make dinner/have dinner, read with them if they are not in bed (depends on night), do house work, talk to wife/watch tv, go to bed. i understand your point but it doesn't help you to think about it like that. it is all a state of mind. and it can be a very temporary time when your kids are young. enjoy every second of the mundane because it will be over in a flash. oh and by the way, most people are not changing the world. you very well may be by raising your kids! Thank you... One DS is a guy who has a rough time making friends, accepting hard issues that kids his age shouldn't even ponder (he is wacky smart) and I feel that mothering him and guiding him is a real job and one I love and does really matter... then I look at -oh - Christian Amanpour and think, "shit, I wanted to do that"... i'm a little bit the opposite. i always knew i wanted to stay home but i didn't think i'd be good at it and i was surprisingly good about it. (now i'm back at work and missing sahm-hood). but it was a huge adjustment...i had to re-evaluate my idea of success. [ Reply | More ]

I'm a WAHM and was just thinking about that this morning. I can't seem to find the time to have a life of my own. [ Reply | More ]
